Logging Food and How it Happens

I like to log my food in the AM, over breakfast (I know I shouldn't divide my eating time with anything else but I do) and I log my projected food for the day at that time. That way I can see how my macros are lining up and adjust as needed. If plans change through the day then I will correct the log, making sure I am within my macros (ultimately). I am not always successful but I have found it REALLY helpful to have a daylong plan that fits in. I often will log a day and see that something is not where I want it to be and will adjust my menu for that for instance, fat vs. carbs (not always perfect but oh well).

I know many don't have the luxury that I do of being able to muse over this during breakfast but maybe the night before? I would be interested in hearing how other people log, and how they work out their intake.

  • I try to menu plan a few days in advance so typically I've logged at least a portion of my planned meals...maybe 2 days ahead of time. I leave wiggle room for snacks etc. Lunches are typically leftovers from dinners. Makes things easy.

I plan loosely by deciding what foods I will cook up on the weekends. I don't eat breakfast except BP coffee, and I practice intuitive eating at lunch. After logging my lunch, I consider my macros and contemplate supper. Occasionally, I pre-log what I might have but most of the time I do not. If I plan to have a snack before bed I do pre-log it to make sure it fits my macros or I change the food (ie fruit or nuts may have to be exchanged for meat or a fat bomb). So that's the most common situation for me to pre-log. Also, I go by taste. I can taste if something is too low in fat and I have many options for added fats. Yum. Even though my macros are very critical to my health and weight loss success, I suspect that because I have been ketogenic so long it comes naturally for me to eat within an acceptable range most of the time.

I'm not overly strict about things like my macros. I've got a general guideline that I aim for but if I'm high in carbs one day, or low in protein, etc. I don't stress out over it too much.

I log after I eat generally because sometimes I'm hungrier than other times so I don't usually preset it.

The exception to that is if I pack a lunch. Then I know exactly what I'll eat so I can put it in before.

With that said, I definitely see how this could be helpful if I was really dialing in my diet.

I only log when I'm working on cutting fat (like I am now). I do carry food with me and log as I eat it. Most days, I don't worry too much about the macros, but then try to adjust on subsequent days (I've been higher on protein a few days this week, so I'll probably go heavier fat tomorrow and Saturday to balance out).

    Why are you cutting fat?
Should be cutting grains and adding fat!!!!

I plan a daily menu in the morning over my coffee and nuts. Then I pre-log before meals, and adjust after meals. I'm on here a lot. ;)

I'm pretty sure the fat he's referring to is body fat, not dietary fat. If you look at his log, you'll see he's doing anything but cutting dietary fat. :flowerforyou:

I usually pre-log my following day after I hit complete logging button at the evening. At this point I already have taken out the meat from the freezer for thawing, so I know pretty well, what we are going to eat for dinner, and I plan my lunch accordingly. This helps me pack lunch at the morning , because it is prelogged.
At the evening I may adjust if I need to.

On work days, I pack a bag, so I log everything in the morning. If I know what I'm having for dinner I'll put that in too. Then I can see my day and make adjustments if necessary. Seems to work pretty good. I've been getting very close to my macros.

Weekends are just log as I go and end up being not so "perfect". I find myself not really having meals, except dinner. The rest of the day I'm just grabbing stuff as I feel hungry.
