Type 2 diabetes and Victoza

This is my second day taking Victoza and I'm about ready to give up on it. I was so nauseated all night I didn't get much sleep. Does anyone that takes this medication have any tips for controlling the nausea until your body adjusts to it? :frown:

My dr was going to prescribe it but I told her if it's not in generic form I really don't want it if I can take something else to help. I'm happy she listened.0

I'm worried that once I get used to it and like it my insurance won't cover it. My doctor gave me a couple of months worth of samples. I need to check into and see if there is a generic available.0

I don't take Victoza - my insurance didn't cover it at the time. I am taking another of that type of medication called Bydureon. I started with Byetta, which was a twice a day injection. The Byetta caused nausea after every shot/meal that got worse over time. I drank diet ginger ale, took ginger pills, and used peppermint Tic Tacs to fight the nausea. I put up with it because this medication really brought my blood glucose into control. With 4 months of use my A1C went from 7.5 to 6.5.
My endocrinologist switched me to Bydureon when the nausea got unbearable and I totally stopped getting sick to my stomach. Bydureon is Byetta, except with a once weekly injection. (More expensive.)
This class of drug looks scary on paper, but if you don't get the bad side effects it's very effective. I feel great on Bydureon (except for constipation). Since starting the Byetta/Bydureon I have lost 88 lbs., my fasting BG has gone from 160s/170s to low 80s, my A1C has gone from 7.5 to the most recent reading of 5.9, and I have gone from 2000 mg metforming to not taking it at all.
I hope it works out for you.0 -
As far as generics, I don't think there is one. This class of drugs hasn't been on the market long enough. It's kind of like new technology. And pretty expensive.0

To help with nausea, are you eating a big meal in the evening? You might try limiting your meal size as well as what you drink in the evening if you are sick all night. I found with the Byetta that if I ate a good-sized meal or drank a lot of water I would feel totally gross.0
