This is it!!!

Hello Ladies,

Just joined this group. I read several posts from women over 50 that truly inspired me. I am 56 and need to lose 30 pounds. I lost 100 pounds seven years ago. I was very fit and exercised at least three times a week. I cut my calories - I didn't count them but instead of eating a whole sandwich, I would eat half - things like that. I gave up ice cream, which for me was an addiction. Before the 100 pound weight loss I would sit in bed and down a gallon of ice cream and then go to sleep. I am a recovering alcoholic and have been sober for 14 years. Have absolutely nothing against drinking but I just can't do it.

I started living with my boyfriend and over the past year I began eating ice cream again (as well as other junk food), not exercising, and am going through menopause. I have been screwing around on this site for a while now. I would lose a few pounds and then stop counting calories, call it a "bad day" and then go on a week's binge of eating like crap. The thing is I know what I need to do and have been unmotivated to do it. I know how good I feel when I work out and eat well. So today is the day - I am going to stick with it this time. I can't tell you how reading the posts have helped me and inspired me to get off my butt and do this. Nice to have over 50 sisters out there in the same boat.

  • Hi - I am also 56 (in a couple of weeks) and need to lose about 30 lbs. I never had much time to participate in this site until I retired from my job a couple of months ago, so now I am trying to recommit and start over. Menopause caused me to gain about 30 lbs and the rest just crept on as the years went by. So now I'm excited to have women out there in the same boat that I can communicate with!

Welcome to the group! One of the things that has been helping me is logging everything I eat and not depriving myself of food that my body needs. Your body needs fuel to keep it running correctly. Logging your food and exercise shows you exactly what you can eat and makes you accountable for what you have eaten. So far I have not had a bad day but I have only been back at this again since 1/2/14. If I want to have a treat I exercise a little bit more. The weight is coming off and I'm eating the calories MFP says to. I am finding it hard to eat my burned calories though. My food diary is open to everyone to see to hold me accountable for my actions. Whatever works for you is great as long as you are losing. Tomorrow is another day and anything can be fixed. Don't give up on just one bad day, we all will have them but we just have to move on to the next day and not give up.

  • Thanks ladies for the encouraging words. I agree that logging everything is extremely helpful. My boyfriend stuffed his face on ice cream tonight and it didn't even tempt me. PROGRESS:smile::smile:

    Hi,

I am new here to this group and to MFP as well. I have a husband who has a job that is much more active than mine. He can cut back on soda and lose weight. Of course, he has not been through menopause either, which I have. I also have issues with motivation and sticking to changing my ways. I do have issues of feeling deprived when everyone else in my house eats chocolate, and I know that is not my best choice. I have decided to work on small victories. Just working out for 3 or 4 days a week every week for a month would be a victory for me. It seems that work or family always gets that time at some point during a given week. I am self-employed and work on production, and unfortunately, we are really struggling financially. I am also working on goals of producing more income each month, and that almost seems to conflict with my goals to exercise and lose weight. If you have any tips, I welcome them! I was referred to this group by someone on the Introduction Board. Anyway, karleigh55, it is good to meet another new person in the group!

  • Just wanted to let you know that I experience temptation at home as well. My boyfriend eats dessert every night - usually ice cream, which is my downfall. I have just had to learn to say no and it is not always easy. I have bought some low cal ice cream bars and some 100 calorie greek yogurt. I have also started to get on this site after dinner so I'm not tempted to eat sugary stuff at night. Not saying that it has worked for long-term just yet but for the past three days it has:)
  • Don't think I responded correctly on here. If you want to respond to a certain member's quote, how do you do that?

Welcome karleigh, Well done on losing the 100lbs that's quite an achievement! I'm 56 and have about 30lbs to lose too, but I'd be happy with 20.

To respond to a quote, under what they wrote you'll see 'report post' 'quote' and 'reply' just hit quote and up comes what they wrote and you can add to it.

Good luck with your journey, we're all here to help each other. :)

    Hi Karle
I keep forgetting to check this group. So sorry girls.

You've done great in the past, you CAN do this again. Does your boyfriend know how hard it is to resist the ice cream? Would he consider flavors you Don't like? (that helps me, as my husband still eats anything and everything he wants).

Are you back on the workout team yet?

I finally feel like I'm close to my goal and I'm nervous what Menopause is going to do to me. The 'wonky' process has begun, ever so slowly.
  • I have informed the boyfriend that he is to eat flavors I don't like and he is being good about it. As I type, he is stuffing his face on a bowl:smile: I haven't started working out yet. I have had my thyroid med upped and I am going for my apt with the hormone doc tomorrow. My goal is to start back to interval training Saturday. I saw a picture of me back in 2010 and I was so fit. I want to get back to that. I do these old tapes and I mean tapes. They are the on VHS and they are called The Firm. I am going to get them copied on to DVDs. They work every part of your with body bursts of aerobics and then weights and floor exercises. I love them but I know I'll be sooooo sore to start. Hope everyone is doing well.
  • Nancy - I think one of the biggest things with menopause (for me anyway) is knowing what the symptoms are. It took me a while to get to the doctor to figure it out. I am against using meds unless they are absolutely necessary and kept saying to myself that I was just going to let nature take it's course. But I honestly could not get out of bed some days. I had no sex drive whatsoever, I was grumpy, had no zest for life, and felt like I was slipping into depression. The bio-identical hormones have honestly done wonders. I went at the urging of a friend that had gone through the same thing and I am so glad I listened to her.

Also there is a lot of information on the internet about hormone therapy. Of course, you never know what to believe but getting an insert, which is a little pellet the size of a tic tac is supposedly a lot safer. It releases estrogen and testosterone slowly into your system to get your levels corrected. Congrats on being so near goal. Great job and thanks for inspiring me.
