Broken Leg!

Hi
I've been on MFP for just over a year. Did a lot of cardio initially which got me so far then plateau then started weight training and although weight went down a bit it stuck and even went back up a bit but my body changed for the better for sure.
I started all pro routine which was great and just before xmas started all body routine for a change up. However I've now broken my leg, had an operation to put a plate in it 2.5 weeks ago but I'm thinking of starting some upper body weight training now? is that wise? any ideas what would be a good routine with dumbells at home. When I can get back in the gym I will....but need to go through physio before I can even think about my lower body. I'm also going to start pilates. My cast comes off 17th Feb hopefully am I OK to start upper body before or should I just rest and let my body completely recover before I start again?
any advise from anyone would be sooooo welcome! I'm so frustrated!!!!
thanks :flowerforyou:

You should ask this question in the Eat, Train, Progress Group.

This is something that I think you should get your doctor's direction on.0

OOPS, This IS the ETP group. I feel silly now :blushing:0 -
agree that you should ask your doctor.
but...I was there a few months ago. Being laid up really sucks.
When I was about 3 weeks post op from having plates and screws put in my ankle I went to the gym 2x a week and did upper body strength training. I always made sure to bring my hubby who helped me through the gym since I was in a hard cast and crutches (this made the gym personnel a little nervous, lol) and I was very, very careful. My doctor gave me his blessing to do so. I also did some seated exercise videos from youtube (not going to lie, they weren't really a great workout but it was better than nothing).
Everyone is different so I'd talk to your doctor, but this helped the boredom factor for me. I shattered every bone and tore every ligament in my left ankle on 7/20/13 and was told by the ER doctor that it was a "catastrophic injury". I'm walking with a slight limp but lower body weight training is progressing really well. I went through 3 1/2 months of PT before really training lower body again (stopped PT due to insurance running out).
Hope you heal quickly and fully!0 -
You will be surprised at how good of arm workout crutches turn out to be. My triceps were ridiculous after spending 6 weeks on them this summer. Focus on getting better, don't do anything before the doctor okays it. The last thing that you want is to end up in the cast for longer because you didn't let something heal.0

thanks everyone, i'll have a chat to the doctor about it then, Im getting so frustrated! I have a partner to go to the gym with to do upper body once Ive chatted to doctor. I think i'll be ok. I've chatted to a friend to help out whos started at the gym now. thanks it's good to hear other peoples experiences for sure
wish me luck!!!:flowerforyou:0 -
Starting an upper body workout should be fine. Take care with how you're supporting your body through the lifts though. Concentrate on a tight core through each lift.
When you are allowed to start weight bearing through your cast, you could also start cycling (stationary bike of course, and low to moderate intensity as indicated by your Specialist.)0
