Varied blood sugar & Metformin

I have 2 questions in a sense because something is not making sense to me.

1. My doctor started me on Metformin again in December after managing without meds for almost a year. All of a sudden my blood sugar started going up instead of down regardless of what I ate that day. I asked my doctor about it and instead of coming off it he said to double up the dose and take 2 instead of 1 a day. Does this sound right? Especially since my last blood work a few weeks ago had my A1c at 5.9% when he decided to put me back on it?

2. In reference to question 1, I've been doubling up for a few days now. My sugar does seem to have come down, but now the strangest thing is happening. If I test once say when I get into work but before breakfast, I'll be at say 120. But then I'll test again 10 minutes later before I'm about to eat and get 104. Today I went from 107 to 98 in a matter of 15 minutes. Is this normal? All week I've had significant drops in a short period of time in the morning and I don't know if it's the medication or something else.

Thanks!

Regarding quick changes of blood glucose levels....

Meters are not perfect. I've taken a reading, thought it seemed too high and repeated the test within a minute and gotten 10 points lower. I don't know if it is the meter or residue on the fingers or something else. That said I have seen my sugar levels change dramatically in short periods of time. I've tested in the 80s before I start exercising and then find myself hypoglycemic 15 minutes later.

I doubt the rapid changes are due to the medication. Our bodies are not perfect machines and blood glucose levels are constantly changing. You might be noticing if you are testing more because of the recent medication changes.
