Ummm... Powerlifting Competition question

Have any of you lovely ladies competed? Do you want to? I know there was some talk about it a few months ago, but I was a newb and thought, "I'll never get to that level." Well, I got curious and looked up the USAPL SC State Championship results, and I was seriously stunned. The woman that won in my weight-class squatted less that 100 pounds!!! WHAT?!? I lift higher in all three catergories? Again, what? I'm not running out and signing up, but its certainly got me thinking that perhaps I could. I would love to know what you all think.

very interesting...
it seems like these are not for laymen(women), but looks like an interesting goal to have. always thought of these as something unachievable.
let us know more details if you are planning to, might inspire more of us...
Best wishes:flowerforyou:0 -
If I were ever to enter anything, it would definitely be a PLC. No desire to be a bodybuilder, figure model, etc. I'd love to compete actually, but have no idea where to even start.0
-
I have competed in PLing and I love it
I'm in the UK and done my 1st proper comp last month and have my next one possibly end of July0 -
I just realised I'm only a couple of kg off the top end of one level, however I'm still a weed in terms of competition! I'd really fancy doing one (although my husband thinks I'm crazy). Something about the competition yet support sounds fab. Not sure about the singlet though!!
girlie - where are you? Essex?0 -
I'd like to compete in powerlifting at some point... although I have to stop being a lazy *kitten* and start training properly. I think I have good genetics for powerlifting but nothing will come of that without working my *kitten* off.0

yep Essex girl me lol0 -
I haven't competed, and am not sure if I want to or not. I looked at Ohio's records, and some of those lifts in my weight class scared me.
I bet you could do it. Your best bet would be to find a power lifting gym where you could get training and competition advice.0 -
I've competed twice and I also love it!
I think everyone who wants to should compete. You don't need to lift a certain amount before they let you in the door, and competing when you're lifting lighter lets you get used to everything for when you are a powerhouse! There were people all over the board at my first meet. My second was at my gym and was a "fun" meet- it used axles and hummer tires, and all the ladies were really strong (only 6 of us though.)
That being said are you sure their weights weren't in kg on the score sheet? I know a lot of times USAPL lists lifters in pounds, but their lifted weights in KG. No idea why. If they list wilks on there you can figure it out that way. http://wilkscalculator.com/ Also good to know so you don't give them your starting weights in lbs when they are doing everything in kg
ETA: also make sure you are looking at "raw" when you look at records if you're comparing your lifts.0 -

Oh, the state records scared the crap out of me, but they were set in 1989 by one particular bada$$ lady. I double checked and the weights lifted were listed in pounds, and I was again shocked. I know I'm not shee-ra by a long shot, and its really not even a matter of actually winning a competition. I think I just want to see if I have the courage to do it. Also want to know if I have the guts for the singlet, Lydia. :blushing:0 -
apparently the funky pretty ones are 'glamlets' lol..0
-
Just do it!!!! If I squeezed my 195lb butt into a singlet you can too  I can even recommend one for you.0
-
not sure I'd ever compete, but I looked up some of last years results and if I officially drop these few lbs I've been fluctuating into the lower class I'd easily beat last years winner. interesting!0

Ooo glamlet? I like that!0 -

That's a state record, look up a local lifting fed and see what their qualifying totals are, they will be much more realistic
I squished myself into a Titan singlet and was surprised its quite thick material so helps so smooth out :drinker:0 -
These are cute!

The state championship numbers from December were what I was looking at that were so surprising to me. The winner in my weight class DL 120 pounds. Not that that's bad or anything, just surprising to me. I always thought you had to be scary strong to compete, so either I was wrong about that or I'm now scary strong. :laugh:0 -

You're a BAMF that's what you are :bigsmile:0 -
damn they are some funky singlets, in the UK you are lucky to find something that isn't black :sad:0
-
Ha, I looked up Texas's last competition, and I figured I could beat all of those lifts. Then I looked at the weight classes, and they're all super low. Yup, they're listed in KG, so everyone's lifting about twice what I am right now. I need to get to work...0
-
girlie - what fed would you recommend in the UK? there seem to be quite a few!0
-
Man I was so excited to look at glamlets and they don't even carry my size. Haters.
120 deadlift sounds super low for a state meet. Especially in USAPL. I was under the impression for their states they have a minimum total before you can compete. Maybe that's just nationals though.
Also echoing the bamf part!0 -
tree - they do custom ones though don't they?0
-
Yes, but now I'm grudging as their highest normal size is for my goal weight. I will never forgive them!0

The glamlet website hurt my eyes! But it's good to have in case I ever do want to compete.
I converted the Ohio results to kg and I think (I hope!) they're given in pounds. Otherwise, there are some scary-*kitten* she-beasts roaming around that could snap me in half!
ETA: I was looking at the wrong thing. The PL results are in kg. :blushing:0 -

I would say general state meet totals would be between 600-900lbs depending on weight class. Does that equal shebeast? And yes I'm bored today can you tell?0 -

Yes and yes. :happy:0 -
Oooh. I thought about it. I'm still thinking about it. But I need to drop a couple pounds still. The qualifying lifts for my weight class are a few years off, haha. (That and there are no comps less than almost 2 hours drive from here so that sucks, too). Powerlifting ain't really big 'round these parts i'm afraid
And I'm sure I would look classy as hell in one of those. Because I'm so girly... Actually might just go for a male singlet if I can fit in one. I would feel so uncomfortable wearing those bright... pattern... things O_o0 -

So perhaps the women competing in my state are a bit less she-beast. The winner in my weight class (148#) total was 270 pounds. It does seem to be pretty sparse competition though.0 -
I was going to participate in one this past fall, but it got postponed (it is a local meet put on through the college) and I was traveling too much to do any effective training.
And most weights are listed in KG for results. Most women will put up a combined score between 600-1000lbs total for the three lifts. The one meet I have watched, I didn't see many squats or DL under 200 lbs. Bench press was about 125-150 average. One woman did bench 245 lbs, but she is a world class powerlifter and has been at this for decades.0 -

you sure they aren't kilos?0 -

BDFPA or GBPF are both drug tested so would look into both of them. The one I just competed in was a regional for BDFPA and the one I'm looking to compete in July if GBPF0
