Hello friends. I am just checking in. My RNY is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Feb. 10. I am into the liquid diet now and already sick of sweet protein drinks. Physically I feel pretty good but my protein shake is gross. Anyway. Looking for friends and support. I like to read people's diarys to see how to eat..especially guys in their 30s so I can get a baseline as to what I should be eating. Anyway..thanks in advance!

I'm 32, and my dairy is open for you to view. I had my RNY Sept 2012. My starting weight was 340, and I'm down to 201.6 right now. I lost the first 100 lbs fairly quickly, and have had a stable weight for about 6 months now. My medical team would love me to lose another 20 lbs, but honestly, I'm happy where I'm at. I went from a 48 waist down to a 34, and XXXL shirt to a L.

As far your surgery, I'm sure your medical team has you pretty well briefed on what to expect during it, and for the first week or so afterward. Follow their directions! Don't be afraid to call them if you have unexpected pain, or your prescribed pain meds aren't working. I'll be honest, the first few days after surgery SUCK. The day after was the worst. The nurses kept making me get up and walk. I didn't want to walk, I wanted to be in bed feeling sorry for myself. But, again, listen to them. The walking sucked at the time, but I got stronger much quicker than I would have otherwise.

For post-op nutrition, protein protein protein. Protein and fiber are your friends! During my initial liquid, and even mushy diet post-op I was very constipated from all the protein. Make sure you take a fiber supplement if you have the same issue. Make small changes in dosage on it. Putting in too much makes it worse. Also make sure you drink plenty of water, but sip at it. Constantly sip at it.

Once you get to mushies, and even full solids, don't be afraid to try new things, and keep an open mind. But, only try one new thing at a time until you know it can be tolerated. You are having your guts realigned, you'll find things that everything tastes different, and is tolerated differently. For my wife (had RNY 7/12) she can't tolerate lactose now. For me, I can't tolerate shrimp now. Small suggestions to stay away from pasta - roast spaghetti squash, or julianne zucchini. Remember, the idea is that the RNY is a tool to get you to change your lifestyle. 50% of weight loss surgery patients gain it all back. You'll lose the first part of your weight quickly enough without having to do anything. After that you have to work for it. After my first 100 lbs, I've had to work for everything past it. I spend about 4.5 or 5 hours in the gym every week, and I watch my calories. I still weigh 95% of my food.

Lastly, use the internet for ideas. Here are few of my favorite websites. My absolute favorite is at the top. I love her philosophy of using higher fat foods and never eating bread, rice or pasta again. Keep in mind that some of these are for "mature" pouches only.

Good luck on your surgery. For eating suggestions, I recommend "Eating Well after Weight Loss Surgery" cookbook. It's got WLS friendly recipes and how to modify for different stages after surgery. And how to serve to non-surgery people.

Thanks guys. Four more days now. The liquid diet has went well until today. Today I have a killer headache and just want to leave work. Come on Monday!
