I went for a yearly general check up. Apart from the usual blood sugar and cholesterol level, and blood pressure, I got my haemoglobin test and thyroid test done.I am 29, married for 2.5 years and we are planning to start our family this year.( "Were" , I must say). My mother has thyroid and though its not hereditary, I just wanted to make sure I dint have one. The results came. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. I was asked to reduce my weight, cure my thyroid problem before planning to conceive.
I was devasted, confused, lost, scared, all at the same time.
It's been four days since then. I have been doing a lot of online surfing, checking on thyroid diets, cutting down goitrogen foods and walking for atleast 30 mins everyday.I have been asked to test my free T3 and T4 levels before starting medications. It ll be a month before the tests can be done.
I have been reading a lot of weight loss stories on MFP thyroidism discussion boards. They are really very inspiring and I feel okay now knowing how so many women have been coping with it successfully. But now and then my eyes swell up thinking if I will ever child now. No one in my family knows about this. Not even my friends. Just my husband and me. They all ve been expectantly waiting to hear the good news and ve been enquiring for a while now. Now I don't know what to say. :_(
I just joined this group today. I hope to learn and gain support from you all. Please feel free to add me as your friend. Your support is much appreciated. Cheers !

Sorry for the rough time you are having. Don't get discouraged! I was diagnosed with Graves Disease at 19 years old (I am 37 years old now). Graves disease is an automoimmune thyroid disorder. I had the radocative idoine to ablate my thryoid. I am controlled completely by meds and have blood tests every 6 weeks as my levels are extremely difficult to control. I have 3 children, 18, 16, and 4 (four year old was my tubal reversal baby). I was overweight when i concieved each of my children. Since having my last child I have now lost 55lbs and almost to my goal weight.
Weightloss is certainly harder for me as my levels seems to always be on they Hypo side..seems like I have to work twice as hard than the normal person for the results, but progress is progress.
Knowing you have the thyroid disorder Dr's should be able to get your levels in check. WHen you are pregnant they just monitor even more closely as the pregnancy can throw levels a bit haywire.
Best of luck to you, and do not think you have been handed of sentence of no children! So many of us will show you that is just not the case!0
