Beginer Weight Training Question

Hi Sara/ Sidesteel,
I am a long time lurker first time poster in your forum. I have a question that is similar to many you have answered but haven’t found a thread that addresses it precisely.
Background:
I am an overweight 42 year old woman (between 28% and 30% body fat). I am half way through a 50 pound weight-loss (25 lbs down and 25 lbs to go). My current diet is a 1400 to 1500 calorie intake with 90 to 100 grams protein and 50 to 60 grams of fat. My primary exercise is brisk walking (12 minute mile) for 3 to 5 miles per day.
I would like to add progressive weight training to my routine both to increase my physical strength (who doesn’t want to be a bad *kitten*?) as well as to improve my appearance (would be nice to have well defined muscles when the rest of the fat melts away). I have no strength training experience and own no equipment. However, I am willing to learn and to invest in some equipment. I prefer to train at home.
I have read “Body by You” and am considering following it. I do like the minimal equipment, however, I find some of the things it suggests (like an assisted pull up on a door) a little awkward and think I might feel more comfortable using more conventional equipment.
Question:
If, as a beginner in reasonably poor shape, I am to invest in some equipment and to attempt a self directed progressive weight training program at home:
1) What should I get for starters?
2) What program should I follow?
Thanks for your thoughts and for the group!

Not sure if a tag counts as a response in your 48 rule.
