Auto immune paleo - Non-scale victory

I began the auto immune paleo diet about a month ago. I was already paleo for quite some time before the switch to AIP. I have had painful rosacea skin for about 15 years.. After one month on AIP, I have left my house 3 times this week with only sunscreen (no makeup!). It has been years since I have been willing to let my face be seen without makeup. My cheeks are rosy, but not blistered and bumpy.

Thanks to your posting your NSV, I went googling AIP. Actually, I'd been online most of today researching anti-inflammatory diets. Thanks to your thread, I was finally directed to the right place, AIP. I've been primal for about a year, so this just fits right in for me. However, it's very daunting to think of eliminating foods. I don't know how you did it, and I'm so very impressed, so I just had to come back here to say thank you and give you a heartfelt "wow, good job!" even though I already cheered you.0

It is overwhelming at first. Once upon a time, I was an amazing baker. I bought whole wheat berries and ground them into flour myself. I was known as the baker girl. I have hashimoto's and I kept reading about how you should rid of all gluten and dairy if you have thyroid issues. I remember thinking, "I could never give up my precious wheat", but eventually I did. Then, I was reading about Whole 30 and Paleo and I remember thinking, "I could never get rid of all grains" but eventually I did. Then my 11 year old son was diagnosed with crohn's disease and I went into hyper research mode. We wanted to avoid the nasty chemo meds that were deemed a "necessity". We started with paleo and then switched to the AIP and we have seen great success for his inflammatory disorder. Then there was me.....hashimoto's is auto immune and I also had many signs of other inflammation (rosacea, bursitis, etc). I really didn't think I could survive any more elimination so hesitated. But I have more than survived With me, I am not sure if just one food or many trigger an immune response. Many experts suggest slowly introducing after a few months to see.
I think anyone with an auto immune issue should give it 30-60 days. Good luck0 -
Sweet!!!
My hubby is doing AIP for his psioratic arthritis. I hope to be able to report awesome news soon too.0 -
I have had good luck with the AIP as well, though mine is even more restrictive than many online and was given me by my rheumatologist. It includes vinegars and things containing yeast, citrus and strawberries, red meat, and caffeine in addition to the usual gluten, dairy, nightshade, and alcohol. It has non-gluten grains on it, but I have been mostly Paleo for at about a year so I continued with that. I am just starting to add food items back in one at a time and discovered right away that egg whites are something I need to stay away from. Other than a bad reaction to those, I am feeling great and even went off all of my pain meds since I no longer need them. I'm sleeping better, the early morning pain and stiffness have gone away, I have more energy, and my digestive issues have resolved. It really has made a huge difference in my health and that makes it so much easier to stick to the diet.0

I don't know what your digestive issues are, but ever since going AIP 10 days ago I am not my usual daily go-er! I think today it's been like 3 days (sorry TMI). I don't have any pain. I know my body might still be adjusting to lower fiber.
**July-Dec 2013- Paleo 80/20
**Jan1st-30th- "Paleo30" (my term for my January whole30 that I still used natural sugars like honey occasionally since my sugar withdrawl was too much for me)
**Jan 31st- cheated between whole 30s.
**Feb 1st -Feb10th- Strict AIP (and I didn't have any sugar withdrawl this time around! Yay!)
It's weird that I'm still losing weight even over the course of days when I'm not going... maybe because my body is using all the nutrients?? (I know weighing/tracking calories isn't "whole30" but I have my reasons for exceptions to those rules)
Anybody's body going through this too? I know I should be eating fermented foods but I feel like I'm still working on cooking normal food- it's a lot of work and I haven't found the right time yet to start learning to make them.0
