Primal/Paleo/Real Foods

Hey EM2WL folks!

I was here many moons ago and I took a break because counting calories was starting to become bad for my mental health. But now I'm back, feeling positive, and looking to make a slow and steady change towards better health!

In my readings I'm fairly taken with the paleo/primal/whole real foods approach and am looking to cut the sugars from my life (or at least reduce them!) and am curious if any folks here follow a similar thing? Much of the paleo community here appears to eat very few calories, IMHO, and also it can often be a 100% or nothing sort of attitude, which seems to work great for many people but not me at the moment. I am hoping to eat in a paleo-inspired sort of way while still following the general guidelines of EM2WL.

Just curious if others here in the EM2WL are taking a primal approach but still eat big! I would love some inspiration to work towards and some more friends in this journey!

Best luck to everyone here!

There's a primal / paleo group on here that is pretty supportive if you need additional help....

My husband and I did the 21 Day Blueprint Challenge a while back. It made a world of difference for my husband and he continues to eat that way today. Turns out that grains really have an adverse effect on his digestive health and he's been feeling wonderful since eliminating them for the most part. His carbs come from sweet potatoes, bananas, other fruits and vegetables, rice, etc. What a difference in his mood, energy crash, bloating, and gassiness when he braves a sandwich or something. It's very obvious for him.

I don't seem to be as intolerant to grains and will have them here and there. We find that the more whole unprocessed foods we eat, the more we crave. My diet isn't stellar, but it's a thousand times better than it used to be. I still eat sugar, but not even close to what I used to eat. lol

I follow the TDEE - 20% approach and have just recently started a cut a week ago. There are many easy ways to get your calories up on a Primal diet. Nuts, coconut oil, avacado, cheese (primal), yogurt, etc.

There are also tons of recipes online that we've tried and now incorporate into our meal rotation. Doesn't take long to get into the swing of things and figure out what the staples are. :)

I am sort of following primal for a while. I have been much stricter before, but it started to became obsessive and it was not good for my mental health. Plus I started strength training, and I wanted to eat high protein for that. It was really hard to get that protein level without eating dairy and protein power. So I loosen up, and now I eat lot of dairy and some cold-cuts also protein powers.
However I still do not eat grains, sugar , legumes , and avoid soy as much as I can. Usually I cook daily, and may eat non-home cooked meal once a week or once every two weeks.
I used to read the paleo/primal group, but I left the group, because the 100% or nothing attitude bothered me. Not to mention that I do not want to do deep keto , and that seems to be more and more pushed over where. Freely allowing myself to eat my cheese, cottage cheese, and do not freak out if my carb reach 120 g a day freed my spirit.

I am not primal but have changed my eating the past 5 weeks. My carbs come in right around 100-110g a day. I have been basing my meals around protein, veggie or fruit and a healthy fat (nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, eggs). If I am hungry I have a snack. I do eat dairy but cut out milk. I eat plain greek yogurt, cottage cheese and string cheese because I can get some good protien from these items. I limit my fruit to 1 to 2 peices a day. This has really helped me reduce my sugar intake. I have lost 5lbs just by changing up a few things. I ate pretty healthy before but now I really focus on the protein and eating a good fat. By adding in the fat, I am satisfied after I eat. I used to limit the fat before. Once a week I may cheat on a meal but it seems to be working for me. Good luck.
