I am 4 days post op RNY and had my first bowel movement at home the day I was discharged. It was black/dark red in color and runny. I called my Dr and he advised it was normal but if it persisted for a long time to call back or go to the ER.... has anyone else had this experience? How long until if changed color? Want to get an idea of how long before I need to have It checked out?? Thank you!!

I don't remember having this problem, but my doc did warn me it might happen (at least the dark and runny part, not the red). I wouldn't worry unless it doesn't correct itself after a couple more BMs or you are having other pain associated with it.

As a preview, once your body recovers from surgery, you may have the opposite problem…constipation….due to the low fiber in your post-op diet.
  • Yeah I think I'll see if it corrects itself in a week or so. There's no pain at all and no bright red blood which could be a bad sign. Thanks for the info.
