The Dawn Phenomenon?

Lately I have been having an elevated BG when I wake up in the morning. I was reading about the Dawn Phenomenon and I am thinking that is what is happening. My question to those of you who experience this: Do you see your BG normalize after breakfast? My sugar this morning was 184. I ate my breakfast and took my metformin and my BG is now 233 post-prandial.
I used to have a BG of around 110 when I would wake up and after breakfast, I might see it spike to 135-140, so this is pretty alarming to me. Any thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Even when I had higher fasting BG they did normalize after meals. Are you doing something different? Super-stress will mess with BG. Any new medication? I got a steriod shot a while back and that totally messed up my sugars for while. Hope you get this figured out!0

I do the same thing. It's high (130s) in the morning and then gets lower. As long as my diet is good, I can have readings well below 100 throughout the day. I played around with how late I was eating, what I was eating, when I took my medicine. Not much of a change.
I brought this up to my dr and he dismissed the theory. I'm not sure which side of the fence I'm on.
Are you taking any statins? Have you been ill? Any change in nighttime eating?
As Cathy said, new meds or stress could be contributing.
I'd call the doctor and see what he/she recommends.0 -
If you haven't been sleeping well, or getting enough sleep, that can lead to raised fasting blood sugar levels. Definitely talk with your doctor about the changes in your blood sugar levels and get her recommendation. ~Lynn /Glucerna0

I have /had the same problems. My mornng was is higher and then it normalized after breakfast. For me high was over 130 but then would drop below 100 after breakfast.
I always get up once in the middle of the night and started testing then It was always in the low 90's so I got really frustrated Bedtime was waws normal and then the 3AM one was even lower and then much higher upon arising.. I changed when I took my medication (500 mg twice a day although the doc says I can take it 3 times a day) so I changed my last one to just before I went to bed and saw no change.
Several days ago, I started taking 2 T of Apple Cider Vinegar just before bed and I've been amazed. It does seem to be dropping. Yesterday was 96 and today 98. I(t's not where I want it but it is improving, so I'm going to continue this for a while. I put the ACV in abt 8oz of water, about 1/8 cup of organic apple juice and 2 drops of stevia over ice. Makes it easy for me to drink. Only time will tell if this continues to work, but right now I think it is helping.
I'm also trying to stop eating a little sooner in the evenings. Sometimes I have a very late dinner which I'm sure does not help.0
