Hello All,
I am new to this group. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes since 2010. My Ac1 at that time was around 7.8. My dr proceeded to prescribe me 4 diff rx's to get my bs under control. I did not like the medications AT ALL and only took the metoformin. At that time I lost my job and was unable to get insurance. Fast forward 4 years, I am now trying to eradicate my diabetes by losing weight and having an overall better lifestyle including nutrition. In the past I did low carb (pre-diabetes) and the weight just melted off (50 lbs). I am now following more of a paleo diet and cut out refined carbs like bread, sugars and junk food. (about a 3 weeks). I excerise 4-5 times a week (zumba) for an hour and am now adding strength training also for an hour. I am not seeing the numbers drop on my scale although I am feeling ALOT better and my fasting sugars have dropped significantly. The only reason I see that numbers are not dropping is fast is because 1. I now have diabetes and not taking med 2. I am 7 years old (37) than when i first lost the weight. Has anyone experienced this better too? Any suggestions? Thank you all!

I know it's frustrating to not lose weight as quickly this time. You're making several important changes in your food choices and exercise, and it's great that you're noticing an improvement in blood sugar numbers. Metform does often promote weight loss, but even without medication it sounds like you're making progress. Have you met with your physician recently? ~Lynn /Glucerna0

LOL yes, I am starting to see that. Myfitness pal app is really helping me keep track of what I eat. I think I just need to be more patient. Thanks for replying0 -
Whether you are on medication or not it is harder to lose weight when you have diabetes than when you did not. Never mind the fact that as we get older our metabolism slows down. Also, it is not uncommon to have a pattern where you lose weight, and the weight lost is both body fat and muscle. Then when you put weight on, you put on fat. That results in a person begin the same weight but with less muscle, which means a slower metabolism. All might explain why you are finding weight loss slower this time.
However slow and steady is what will win this race. Your blood sugars have come down with diet and exercise, and that is an awesome Non-Scale Victory. Don't give up. You may find you have to tweek your diet and exercise routine until you find a combination that works for you, but you can do it.0 -

Are you on your last 20 lbs., or is that your short term goal? Those last pounds take longer to lose. Patience. As long as you eat a deficit it will go down. Last time I got 20lb. from my goal weight I seemed to stop losing, but I was just losing it slower. I, unfortunately, didn't have MFP or even know what calories were back then.0 -

Thank you. I fortunately was able to see an MD last week and am starting on metaformin 1000mg with evening meal. However I was totally bummed because it seems that I now have high blood pressure! I am going for a full workup on Friday. I thank God that I am already on the road to eating better and healthier. It makes it all the more important to keep going!0 -

Depending on your doctor you might find that they will want to put you on medication for the HBP right away. As Type 2 diabetics, we are considered to be at high risk for heart disease and heart attacks. A lot of the guidelines for Type 2 diabetics are similar to those for someone who has already had a heart attack. I have found my doctor to want to have blood pressure and cholesterol in tight control.0 -
 Thank you! Yes, HBP really freaks me out since I had a young friend who had a stroke due to HBP (which she was unaware of). In the past (pre-diabetic), I had unusually high Triglycerides so I am sure that cholesterol medication will also be prescribed. UGH, I wish I would have paid closer attention to my health earlier!0
