Just diagnosed

Hello,
I'm new to mfp and hypothyroidism. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
I'm not overweight but have always had to be very careful about what I eat. I was only able to maintain my weight at about 9.7 st at 5ft 5 by eating no more than about 1200 calories and exercising every other day. Over the last two months I started to feel terrible, very slow and tired, and just piled on the pounds, gaining about a stone. There was nothing I could do to shift them, I've been feeling so low - and freezing cold! I went to the doctor for a blood screen (I have a DVT and pulmonary embolisms last year so have a complete blood check every 6 months to make sure all ok) The surgery phoned my yesterday said that I was hypothyroid and I've started on Thyroxine 25 mg a day. There was no discussion with my doctor. I asked for a copy of my results, out of curiosity and because I want to do everything I can to get back down to my usual weight and start feeling better.
The problem is I have no idea how to interpret the results and I was wondering if any of you kind people would help!
TSH was 9.5 (which seems to be high because the range is (0.35-5.5) BUT the FT4 was normal, at 11 range (10.0-19.8)
Finally, I've been having terrible pains on the soles of my feet, which have really stopped me from doing much exercise apart from swimming. I read online that this is connected with the thyroid. Do any of you have the same problem and some tips to make it better? Finally, how long does it usually take to get the TSH back in range from when you've started thyroxine?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions!
P.S. - If anyone else has has a DVT and is also hypothyroid, do you know if there is any link between the two?

Hi, yes 9.5 is high. And although it says normal is up to 5.5, normal is really between 1-2. Hopefully you have another blood test coming up soon, b/c you'll definitely need a dosage increase. 25's really a starter dose, 50's the lowest dose for treatment.
It will take a while, it really depends on how long it takes till you find the correct dosage.0 -

^^ This for sure. Until you are properly medicated (meaning finding that correct dose) it will be almost impossible to lose the excess weight, sorry to say.
Try and keep up with your diet as much as you can, and once you find your dose it will start to come off.
(I couldn't keep up with my diet and workout btw. Between the crippling depression, fatigue and random body pains, I couldn't even force myself to do it.)0 -
Thanks, I think that it's just something I'll have to get used to. I'm fortunate in that many people seem to have suffered far worse than I have with it, and at least I've been diagnosed very quickly.
I think that they started me on 25mg of thyroxine because the pe's last year put quite a strain on my heart.
I was just wondering, does it really count as hyperthyroid if the FT4 are still in range, albeit low?0
