What kind of bike should I get?

Here is my situation. I am currently borrowing a friends bike. It's a nice road bike. I am doing one sprint and 2 olympics this year and I think I can use her bike for them all. But I do eventually need to get my own bike. My long term plan is to do a 70.3 next spring and a 140.6 the year after that. I will be doing pretty much all my riding in training for those events. So do I buy a road bike or a tri bike?

I'd buy a tri bike. Where in Texas do you live?

Well you have a TON of options then. Go see Tad Hughes (www.tadhughescustom.com) or Philip Shama (www.shamacycles.com) and have them pre-fit you. Phil will try and sell you a custom bike so be strong if you go see him. He builds really pretty bikes. Anyway they'll be able to tell you what brands/models fit your body. From there go shopping.

craigslist. tons of options for you. especially in the houston area. no need to spend a grand or two on a brand new bike when there are a bunch of nice used ones out there.

So here's my issue with Craigslist. Unless you are well versed in bike maintenance, buying a used bike from an individual is a crap shoot in my opinion. I'd buy a used bike from a bike shop or a friend I knew had meticulous upkeep habits but that's about it.

    Definitely a tri bike.

Buying used is risky, but good deals can be had if you know what you're looking for. A safer bet might be to hook up with a local tri club and wait to see if anyone there is upgrading. Not fool proof, but less of a crap shoot than with craigslist,t at least IME.

Oh yeah. Due a lot of research first. Craigslist has benefit over a bike shop because you can occasionally get really good deals because the seller is not as informed as you are.
