Day 18...suddenly feeling crappy keto flu again?

I'm keeping calm and ketoing on  ......
BUT......
I was surprised to wake up today feeling crappy. Since yesterday I've had kind of a dull headache and today I'm just feeling very sluggish and kind of a bit nauseated.
I'm trying really hard to drink water (although I'm definitely struggling today). I'm taking a daily multivitamin, as well as potassium and magnesium supplements, as well as making sure to get enough salt daily. I'm probably at 30 ounces so far today, usually by this time I'm at closer to 50-60 ounces.
So, basically just wondering if this is still part of the keto flu and induction period, as far as things being a bit unstable? Should I expect things to be a bit unpredictable for the first 6-8 weeks?
So far today I've had:
2 bacon, 2 eggs and a coffee with heavy cream for breakfast
2 bacon, big bowl of salad with olive oil and caesar dressing, one slice of cheese (chopped up) and sprinkle of parmesan
For a snack, one big spoonful of organic crunchy peanut butter. Haven't had dinner yet.
Any tips for today to get me up and going a little bit?

I had similar problem around the 20 day. That day I had such a bad head ache I could not even sleep so what I did is I upped my carbs from 30 grams to 50 that one day. The next day I went back down to 30 and I was feeling fine again. I was doing a 30 day diet, but the rest of the time after I had increased my carbs for a day I was feeling fine again.0

I can't say that I noticed this myself, but it would make sense that the 2-3 weeks in point would be a telling time with any radical change in eating pattern. And going from a higher carb diet to a keto adapted state is a pretty big change. :-) Also, I couldn't see your diary so wasn't able to review your menus from the last couple days...could be something lurking there that was the impetus for the way you're feeling today.
Pop some Excedrin Migraine (fabulous mix of aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine that works wonders and works fast) to deal with the headache and I agree w/ the poster who suggested slightly upping your carbs w/ GOOD (as in, no cakefests, no potato chip frenzies) choices for today, then back to your normal levels. I was an Atkins follower prior to moving toward a more Keto-based approach, and it was encouraged in that plan as well to move your carbs up slightly if you were feeling unwell.
Good luck!0 -
It could be just another round of keto flu. Some take longer than others to adjust.
Since I can't see your diary and assuming your eating enough and a well balanced, varied diet with low carb veggies, I'm kinda wondering if MAYBE, just maybe you're experiencing mineral/vitamin overload with taking so many supplements. Generally low carbers don't need supplements if they're eating low carb veggies, nuts and a little bit of berries. You can overdose on vitamins and minerals which can produce symptoms similar to keto flu. The extra fat in the diet assists with mineral absorption and storage.
At the same time the opposite can be true and you're lacking vitamins and minerals or there is an imbalance of minerals, if you're not eating a balanced, varied low carb diet. Supplements would be needed then. However, if you're not taking enteric coated or "slow release" supplements, you're only absorbing 7-11% of the supplement at best and most of that will be B & C vitamins. In contrast, the absorption rate of an enteric coated multivitamin is between 60-80%. Most vitamins and minerals in a non-enteric coated supplement are destroyed by stomach acid before they reach the intestines to be absorbed. Enteric coated multivitamins run about $50-60 for a bottle of 100-120 tablets - much more spendy than average bottle of multivitamins. Most multivitamins on the public market are not enteric coated.
I agree. Experiment with your diet a little bit and see if that helps any.0 -
Often people find TWO bouts of "keto flu" ...
The first is as they enter ketosis - which you've already done. The second is when they actually undergo a physiological change known as "keto-adaptation".
Keto-adaptation is NOT the same as ketosis - you can look at it as the evolution of ketosis if you'd like ... You can be in ketosis without being keto-adapted.
When you first enter ketosis your body will still PREFER glucose for energy, although it uses glucose and ketones for fuel. It's not until it gets accustomed to it that the change comes where it prefers ketones. Once ketones become the preferred fuel the person is now keto-adapted.
Keto-adaptation has been known to take some people eight full weeks. For most it's around 3 weeks the first time they work towards it. There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest the keto-adaptation DOES happen faster the more you do it - ie: if you cycle a ketogenic diet.0
