Hello - one week in

Hello

I'm Ruiadh (roy-ah) from the UK. I started easing to Paleo just over a week ago after devouring as much on line stuff as I could, and reading both The Paleo Solution and The Paleo Answer.

Prior to doing this I'd been nearly veggie, eating lots of soy and soy milk, fat free yogurt, pasta, Quorn, beans, and home made handmade bread (unlike the chemical stuffed rubbish in the shops - damn the Chorleywood process!). I'd also been part of Slimming World, doing their Green Day protocol (the very low fat veggie one - lots of vegetables and fruit but also lots of starches, LOTS!). Although I lost nearly two stone, It stalled, I got incredibly hungry, and wanted FOOD and I began to slip away from SW.....pork pie anyone? Yes, those pork pies aren't good on ANY way of eating.

It was researching an auto-immune illness that I suffer from (hidradenitis suppurativa) and reading a book called "The Hidden Plague" about it, that I came across the Auto-immune protocol, and thence to Paleo. Gods it was like a veil falling from my eyes - common sense, logic, scientific understanding, I am a nurse in a hospital and am going to give that book to our dermatology consultant to read. As an allopathic doctor she may not be able to implement everything suggested, but if it shakes up her understanding - got to be a good thing ;-)

Anyway, I've eased into Paleo over this week.....eating up what I had in, though no legumes and no dairy, and yesterday had my first full paleo day - Yipee! Today is shaping up OK too, though eating enough fat seems to be an issue....! Cooking with coconut oil, salads with olive oil, nuts and so on - oh I am sure it's fine! Since I started this I haven't had one post-carb "slump" which I used to get all the time with potatoes. If I get hungry - it's off to the fridge for chicken, or some berries or other fruit. I love it.

Thanks to Loren Cordain and all who have in their own ways contributed to the understanding behind the Paleo way of eating (not going to call it a diet - as that has grown into a different meaning from its original one!)

What do people do for breakfast? Today I made banana and almond pancakes with blackberries, raspberries and a little more banana, but during the week, well last week it just seemed to be a big bowl of fruit, with added seeds, and some coconut milk.

Anyway, glad to be here, thanks for listening to me rabbiting on!

Welcome Ruiadh, You're in the right place and there is plenty of support here to be had. I personally eat eggs everyday for breakfast, occasionally will have blueberries and yogurt but almost always with at least one egg. Spring and Summer are coming so there may be more fruit in my diet but I am a low fruit person by choice I am trying to keep my carbs under 75 a day.

I have the standard American breakfast most days, which are eggs and bacon. Sometimes I'll make a spinach, mushroom, and goat cheese omelet, which is yummy, or eat leftovers from dinner the night before. I have come to the realization that too much fruit is the enemy, so I'm weaning myself off of higher glycemic fruits, and limiting myself to one apple per day.
You'll find great support and advice here, welcome!

ETA: I would suggest eating lots of healthy fats, which helps in weight loss and feeling full. I try to keep my carbs in check, usually under 50g, and I've stopped counting calories, because it doesn't matter if I'm eating the right foods.

Welcome and glad to hear that you are enjoying this way of life! It really is wonderful and full of delicious food and optimal health!!

As far as breakfast goes, I usually eat eggs (love them for any meal really) but I often will have ground beef or ground pork with mixed veggies. I keep both cooked up or chapped and ready to go in the fridge. Ground beef is delicious with brussels sprouts and butternut or cabbage. Pork is great with brussels and apples. anything really, throw it in the pan together, add some spices and throw an egg or two on top. Yummers!

I follow 80/20 primal/traditional foods (WAPF) but am leaning more and more towards 90/10. I eat dairy, choosing raw over conventional but I will eat conventional as well. If I do consume legumes, rice, or other grains I soak, sprout, or sour them for digestibility. I stay away from soy as much as possible and rarely eat gluten, occasionally I will eat some local, organic, non-GMO sourdough (a few times a year).

Ask lots of questions and read as much as you can. There are so many approaches to paleo/primal and you will find what works for you :)

I eat a three egg omelette with cheese and 2 or 3 cups of frozen vegetables for breakfast almost every day. Sometimes I eat a can of tuna or salmon and frozen vegetables and a whole avocado. The egg theme is usually an omelette but it could also be a frittata or scrambled, or boiled (soft or hard), or poached. Poached in salsa is really good! Pesto to give a different flavour and I see you don't eat dairy but for those that do a different cheese really changes things as does different vegetables. I'm glad you are feeling better! It really makes a difference for me to eat this way. I don't go particularly low carb but I get my carbs usually from vegetables and maybe a little fruit. My pain has really decreased. Good luck to you!
