Running Bummer Stickers

I was over some friends' house. Well, they are my husband's friends... but they are pretty impressed with the distance I'm able to run. I also have a 50k bumper sticker on my car. So the female was saying that she would be happy and accomplished with a 13.1 sticker.... and how it would be her dream to go that distance. Me being the motivational speaker, told her she is able to... she could walk some of it. She looked on me and said, "Hell no! That would be cheating! If you have a bumper sticker on your car you should run the whole distance!"... So, I said... "Okay, how about a 5k sticker??" She almost punched me in my face! Her response was, "Anybody can run a 5k... who gets that sticker??? I get it, that if you are on a weight loss journey and ****... and happy that you are all healthy, that would be an accomplishment... but come on, who gets that sticker??"... So my question to you is, Is it okay to walk and run a race and still get a bumper sticker advertising that said race? Also, what's the lowest distance worthy of a bumper sticker? I know if I ever ran a 15 - 16 minute 5k, I'd smack that bumper sticker right over that 50k one.

Lol yeah. I don't care what you do with your car. Do I find it funny to see 5k? Yes. Is it funny to see 13.1, slightly. I got my dad a 0.0 sticker. He loves it ;)

I thought this was about sad stickers, "bummer" stickers. Maybe a "DNF" or "26.1" or a silhouette of a treadmill?

To me, it's about where you come from.If you go from overweight and sedentary to completing a 5k, that is an accomplishment. So no, I don't lol when I see 5k stickers, that sounds like elitism to me. No, I applaud the effort made and encourage more. To directly answer your question OP, yes, even if I run/walk a given distance, I completed it. I'll take the sticker.

    Yeah yeah haha

I do snicker when I see a 5k sticker, but then I think that there is possibly a good story behind it and we all started somewhere. Now "runner girl" and pink bubbly numbers... Yeah, roll call ladies - who's got 'em? Be honest :)

I think it entirely depends on the individual. If someone was 400 pounds and lost 200 and ran a 5k then I think that would be super worthy of celebrating and bragging about. Hell I considered it a huge achievement to run a 5k when I had never run before. I waited until I did a 13.1 before I got the sticker because to me that was something extremely monumental. (Even though now that's just called "Sunday". It was a BFD the first I did it) So it all depends.

LOL! No runner girl or bubbly numbers...but I do have a magnet with my running group's name on my car (Moms RUN this Town) and the letters are pink ;) I also have TWO 13.1s on my car, one is a magnet...the other is a sticker specifically for ATHhalf because...it was Athens...and I'm a bulldawg...duh! :D

I think if you complete the distance, you can get the sticker, wear the shirt, whatever you like. You finished it, and for many people that is their goal. I don't have any running stickers on my car yet, but there is a 13.1 that is ready to be put on in 2 weeks as soon as I finish my half. This is my second one, so technically I could have put it on already, but it has been years since my first half so I want this to be about what I can do now.

If I saw a 5k sticker, I would think "Cool, another runner".

When I get my first DNF I will order that sticker.

If I was a football player and did well at the combines I would proudly use a 40 yard dash sticker

I think people should feel free to promote their success (or DNF level effort) at any distance

26.1-love it! Now THAT would suck!

I am also in for the whole "If you're proud of it, own it" school of thought. Who is to say that my 26.2 is any bigger of an accomplishment than the next guy's 5K? Anyone that is out there running gets my respect, regardless of distance or pace or any of that BS.

Since my marathon was only around 25 miles, maybe I could get a "25" sticker?

    Haha awesome!

I think people have the right to be proud of their accomplishments so I wouldn't laugh at any distance bumper sticker. Except maybe the 0.0 which is pretty cool!
A lot of people use the run walk methods to achieve their marathon or half marathon goals, i don't think it takes away their right to display the distance. Go them! Yay for runners of all kind!

<--- has a pink sticker from my first 13.1

I went from weighing 220 pounds and barely able to do the first week increments of the C25k to losing 60 pounds and running my first half in under 2 hours. All while going to grad school, having two toddlers, and my husband was deployed.

You can take that sticker off my car when you pry it out of my cold dead fingers.

(but the husband refuses to drive my car anywhere. I had to buy a magnet for him to slap over it. The magnet just says Bacon and has a picture of it. Ha)

And when I run my first full this year, you can beat your sweet bacon that I will be putting that sticker on there too. Is it cheesy and a bit sad? Hellyeah. Do I care? Helltotheno. I paid for that car MYSELF. First new car I ever had. DRove it off the lot and watched it depreciate, lol. If I want some stickers to make me feel pretty, sticker me up!

Edited: as for the whole run/walk thing, who cares? That takes too much energy to evaluate someone else's achievements. Did the guy in the hand cycle not really do a marathon because he didnt run? No. because he is even MORE badass for doing it with a hand cycle. I am not going to lie, I think there are levels of badassery. Like a 3 hour marathon-badass x10. But just doing one still gets you on the badass chart.

After running 13 full marathons, I FINALLY bought the 26.2 sticker for my car. I've earned the "DNF" sticker but would never display it. Too embarrassing although I learned a lot from that marathon DNF. Heck yeah, it's ok to get a bumper sticker if you walk some of the race! Are you gonna say that all of us "Galloway" disciples have not earned our 26.2 bumper stickers? I didn't think so!

I'm a big fan of the "0.0", almost bought one at the Hartford Marathon expo. "DNF" is pretty good too. Carson, get a "named.conf" and I'll be impressed.

I actually have a 10K sticker that won't stick to my back window. It keeps falling off. Maybe it's trying to tell me something?

I do plan on getting my 13.1 sticker after I finish in a couple of weeks. Not sure what the big deal is as far what race accomplishment you want to advertise on the back of your car or if you walked a couple of miles of it or whatever. If you cross both start and finish lines on your own 2 feet, then be proud of it.

Yeah, that's what I think too. Accomplishments are accomplishments, and like speed, they're all relative.

    Bummer? ????

People should feel free to be proud of their accomplishments. Everyone has a story.

Personally, I've never gotta a sticker, but that's just me.

I have a friend with a 5K bumper sticker! Also, his 5K PR is something around 16:15? He wins most of the 5Ks he runs.

He's also run a bunch of 100 milers as well - I don't think he's won any of those, but I know he's won a handful of 50ks and a couple of small marathons.

But..... OP, encourage your friend to sign up for a hard 50 miler, and then egg her on that she needs to run the whole thing. HAHAHAHAHA! Oh, HAHAHAHA! I don't think I've "run all of" any of my trail races, including the short ones! If the terrain is steep enough, it's faster to powerhike.

And here was I thinking that I was a sissy in planning to walk some of the 24 hour race I signed up for.... The mileage I do, whether walk, run, crawl or roll... I'll proudly count them as miles!

You know that Galloway has coached people to run/walk to Boston qualifying times? Enough said.
