This Can't Be Right...Can It?!!

I just did the calculations per Scooby and it says I should eat 1857 calories/day which is fine. But based on the 40/30/30 ratio I should be eating 186 carbs a day?!!! SERIOUSLY?!!

Yes! If I'm not mistaken, carbs are the easiest source of energy for our bodies to use! If you're at all active, a moderate carb intake is pretty important. Make as many of them complex as you can, and voila! some added energy and satiety.

I eat 200g+ of carbs everyday and am in a pretty comfortable place weight and bodyfat-wise. I even eat extra carbs before workouts for energy. Some of the athletes I've been stalking on the blogosphere consume upwards of 400g of carbs to support their energy levels (okay, so they're the men from liftbigeatbig, but they're really cool guys).

EDIT: you can also change the macro split if you feel it would work better for you (35/40/25, 45/35/20, etc.)

Wow! I'm just floored! I've been doing a low-carb, high-fat diet for two months with no success and no energy so to think I can even eat this many calories, especially carbs, just blows my mind! I do some walking every day and just a little weight lifting with dumbbells, which I'm going to increase now. This is my first day (afternoon actually) of doing this WOE so I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong. I'm already over on my fat for the day because of the LCHF thing but I can fix that beginning tomorrow. I went by the 40/30/30 ratio because that was what was recommended on the website. Do you personally think this is a good starting point or should I adjust differently?

It sounds like a good starting point to me! Give it two weeks or so and see how your energy levels are feeling. You'll probably see a bump in the scale from the increased carbs due to water, extra food in the GI tract, etc., but try to ignore this! It's just bloat.

Macro splits really boil down to how your body reacts to things, your goals and your personal preference in foods; with my Eastern-European background, I eat a lot of fat (which always tastes so good with carbs!), so I know it's tough for me to limit that and keep my protein over 100g. Just my cross to bear.

Are you doing a metabolic reset or increasing to TDEE after a (relatively) short diet? I ask because the water weight bump in the scale after you increase might be larger than mine was because of the low carbs (I think because of glycogen depletion/restoration?). I started from a loooong low calorie history, so it's taken a while for my weight to settle, but now I'm on my first cut, and have actually seen some positive changes in my body!

Obviously not a cause for panic, but something to be mindful of. I hope I was helpful! :flowerforyou:

I've been eating 1500 calories a day and to start with my protein was close to 100, with low carbs and moderate fats. I've just felt so bad and run-down and haven't seen any results so I posted a question in another group I'm in (not diet related). They all began to tell me I'm eating way to few carbs! I'd joined the EM2WL group a year or so ago but never fully embraced it (or understood it --- I still don't). But I thought after two months something had to give. I can't keep going feeling the way I do (weight aside). The 1857 calories don't seem that far from what I've already been eating and I've always thought more protein was a good thing, not a bad thing, unlike the keto diet I've been on.

Honestly, I can't say I fully understand everything on EM2WL either, but after trying to eat less than 1,100 calories a day and working out 6x a week for almost three months, I was ready to try anything that didn't sound like a fad diet.

I'm only 23, average height and build, but with a high "jiggle" percentage. I should have been eating around 1,900 calories for fat loss, not 1,100! I had been eating as little as possible for over two years (lost 65lbs the first year, then stalled for 16mo) at the point I took up heavy weight training with StrongLifts 5x5 and found not only EM2WL, but a lot of other people like Amber of GoKaleo, Molly Galbraith and the girls of GirlsGoneStrong who preach eating to support activity, not activity for punishment after over-consuming. So I bought it and haven't looked back! my energy has been so much more stable.

Sorry, I just *whew* needed to share! I've built up a strong base and have developed musculature under all the jiggle while enjoying my food, and want everyone to know they don't have to feel totally miserable while dieting.

I eat 200-250g of carbs per day. Mostly whole grains, beans, fruits and veggies, as opposed to pasta, bread and rice. My main goal is 150g of protein, as long as I hit that I'm not worried about the others so long as what I'm eating is mostly healthy. I find I need to fuel with more carbs before workouts or I don't have the energy to get through a tough workout.
  • KaterinaTeres has given you some fab advice and ideas and thoughts and I can only second that!

re read and read everything that you can as many people find its more a mental thing than anything else - ie really can I eat this much!!

But yep go for it and enjoy the extra energy the better sleep the more exercise (cos you want too) and the stronger you will get and feel - its a fab feeling!!!

4/6 weeks reset for me and I originally put on about 7lbs but have lost that whilst eating up to TDEE over the last 3 weeks - so yeah I am eating 2013 cals per day (trying to get to 2400 TDEE) and i am losing weight!!!!! crazy but SO true! no longer the 1200/1000/800 cals per day that I used to do!!! So very happy staying at reset until things settle down a bit better

    Enjoy and have fun :)
