Working out with a strained hip flexor?

I haven't a clue how I did this to myself, but on Tuesday my hip flexor starting KILLING me. I work as a visiting nurse, and every time I would lift my right leg (getting in the car was not fun), my hip flexor would scream. Wednesday was some better but not great, Thursday was totally manageable, and today is even better. The pain is not gone, but I can function just fine.

My MD has said absolutely no running for at least 3 weeks...and walking on the treadmill must be limited to a normal gait (no speed walking, etc).

I assume squats, deadlifts, leg press etc are out too? I have GOT to get some exercise, or I am going to lose my mind.

I'm thinking upper body lifting should be fine...but I'm wondering about abs/back?

What about the recumbent bike, just to burn some calories?

What would your week in the gym look like if you had a strained hip flexor? TIA!

You can always try and see. I would suggest a general approach of "if it hurts, don't do it" when selecting exercises during your hip issue.
