Is it a good idea to not have carbs at dinner? Thinking of trying it.

My PCP (who is a certified diabetic educator) recommends that the carbs be spread evenly over the course of the day. Her recommendation for me is to stay around 50g each for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with 30 spread over my mid-afternoon and evening snacks for a total of 180 per day.

Talk to your doctor or see a diabetic educator who can see what is best for you.

    Ok, thanks, I plan to.

It's great you're going to get a referral to a registered dietitian. There isn't one set amount of carbohydrate to eat at each meal, and each person needs to individualize their diet based on your specific needs. A lot depends on any medication you take and your activity level as well. ~Lynn /Glucerna

The right total number of carbs per day varies from person to person. When you should have them also varies. For example I am carb sensitive in the morning, so I focus on protein in the morning and not as many carbs. In the afternoon my bg is more likely to go low, so I include carbs at lunch and in my afternoon snack. For me dinner and bed time carbs don't seem to be a problem.

You really need to talk to your dietician and figure out what works for you by measuring before and after meals. You will find out what foods affect your blood glucose and how much you can handle at a meal.

Managing your food choices and blood sugar levels does seem daunting at first, but over time it gets easier. A good primer on carbohydrate is at http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/what-can-i-eat/understanding-carbohydrates/?loc=ff-slabnav ~Lynn/Glucerna

Checking it out. I have always just gone by calories, so this is pretty new to me. Thank you.

I am the same. Any previous weight loss efforts have always gone by calories only and I never paid attention to the macros. The last time I tried to lose, my hair started shedding like crazy and I found out that it is a typical side effect of not getting enough protein and fat. It was really difficult for me to switch to protein snacks rather than carb snacks but a couple of months in, I am getting the hang of it. I am also getting better at planning my meals with fewer carbs. It took close to 2 months to really feel like I am getting the hang of this (I was diagnosed 3 months ago). Hang in there, it will come!
