Numb hand/arm while squatting

Sometimes when I have the bar on my back for squats, my left hand gets numb.

This happens most often when I lift while my neck and traps are tense or sore. If I am loose in those areas, this does not happen. The feeling is similar to what happens when I have a pinched nerve in my neck.

Any insights? Any preventative measures?
