Training Methods

Being a master (50 year old) runner I have always modified my training plans to ensure that I don't injure myself and yet run as much and as fast as I am able. Daniels, Galloway, Hanson, Pfitzinger, Higdon, Waitz or other; which method do you use?

For my half marathon and full marathon training to date, I've used Higdon's novice and intermediate 1 programs that just use foundation runs and long runs. I found that I got really bored with the lack of variation in the runs.

For my second marathon, I am using Matt Fitzgerald's plan which includes the basic foundation and long runs, but also includes various types of speedwork. I'm already seeing some increases in my pace and can finish my runs stronger. I don't know that Fitzgerald's plan is super-unique but what I do like is that it can be used with a heart rate monitor and an interactive app for coaching. Maybe it's cheesy, but I do like the coaching a lot.

I'm also following the nutrition guidelines in his book "The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition" and have found them very, very helpful. I ran a half marathon trail run a couple of weeks ago that kicked my butt last year. This year I finished feeling amazingly strong and much faster. (The marathon training program is in the book, too. The coaching program follows the book but is purchased through a phone app separately.)
