Is this normal?

I just started Paleo/Primal on Monday, and I've been pretty nauseated. I'm also having some vertigo. I'm assuming this is a pretty common detox symptom of going grain free. It always seems to be worse in the morning and gets better as the day goes on (and no, I'm no pregnant). Any thoughts to help get through these first few days? I've been drinking peppermint tea, which helps.

Thanks!

If you open your diary, we could give you more specific suggestions (I just said this on another thread, so now I feel like a nosey MFP'er, ha!). But from my own experience, I found eating things like a banana with almond butter or a sweet potato with grassfed butter really helped me avoid that detoxing feeling. Frozen fruit also helped me avoid processed sugar withdrawal symptoms.

My guess would be that you are eating far too few calories. Pretty common when you switch to Paleo. You were previously getting a large chunk of your calories via white carbs, now you aren't. If you try to replace that with vegetables and salads you will be essentially starving yourself.

Nuts, avocados and that sort of thing would be the way to go if that is the problem. I did not have ANY nausea or vertigo at all when I switched.

It is completely normal to feel crappy for the first week or two. Until you get adapted and feel better, forget about calories, but watch the carbs, especially sugar. Eat as much fat and protein as you need to feel satiated for now, just to get through. It will get better, and very soon!

If you are busting through a sugar addiction you will have nausea and dizziness for awhile. Opening your diary will help if you want tailored advice from those of us who have been through it. :flowerforyou:

Thanks, everyone. I did open my diary and would love any advice! Please note, I am allowing some dairy, creamer in my coffee (one thing at a time!) and some dark chocolate.

I do feel like I'm eating enough calories (I'm really not hungry at all), so I'm sure my body is getting used to no grains.

The quickest thing I noticed is your carb/sugar intake. I had pre-diabetes, depression, BED, etc etc before I started this lifestyle and if I ate anywhere near the level of sugar that you are eating I would be dizzy, nauseous and be driven uncontrollably to eat constantly. Do you have any metabolic disorders (excess fat storage is one, but by your ticker you aren't very over-weight)? If you do, you might want to look at your sugar consumption.

If everything is working fine for you feel free to ignore me!

The only thing that really jumped out at me was the flavored milk and the creamer you're using. It's hard to believe one thing (well, two, technically) could have such a big impact on how you're feeling, but I bet the back label is a ****storm of chemicals. Could you try replacing the flavored creamer with heavy cream or half and half (although read the back labels...even some organics have carrageen added!)? I think TJ's organic variety half and half and heavy cream is chemical free. Also, Thai Unsweetened Coconut milk is delicious and perhaps a good replacement for the TJ brand flavored stuff.

Thanks, guys! I do appreciate the help. I am feeling much better today - more like myself. I do know both the creamer and coconut milk have a good amount of sugar, so I'm going to work on those. I have unsweetened coconut milk at home, but I wanted to use up the flavored stuff from my fridge first.

I don't have any health concerns (like pre-diabetes), but I have been struggling to lose weight. I'm suspecting a food intolerance - I know I have issues with both corn and wheat. Sugar isn't a huge concern for me, so I won't worry too much unless it impacts my weight loss. This week I'm pretty much focused on getting grains out of my diet, and I'll tackle the other stuff (like making sure I have the right % of carb, protein, fat) as I get the hang of it.

Might not be a bad idea to read up on Mark Sisson and his guidelines for your macros and what to eat,how to lose with a primal approach, etc.
Here are some links that can help..it's a great guideline for all you need to know

This is generally a good way to approach this lifestyle. Most people do well just be cutting out grains. Getting too muddled with macros and other stuff when you are starting out can make it more challenging. Just eat real food, track what you eat and carry on.

Every person is different and has different needs for their macros. Just get adapted to this way of eating and if you stall or have issues then start paying attention to macros.

I felt pretty rubbish when I first started paleo, lacked energy, nausea, dizzyness and a very short temper. It gets better keep at it. You will soon feel so well you will be bouncing around.

I was this too the first time I attempted to go Paleo. Particularly the bad tempered bit, which was what made me abandon the lifestyle initially. It wasn't fair on my kids who were simply being kids and I had to literally bite my tongue as so I didn't go "RAHHHH!" at them!

I'm Paleo again now because I could acknowledge that there were HUGE health benefits but I did NOT want the nausea, bloating, crankiness and exhaustion that I had the first time around. So I slowly introduced myself back into it. I started by having a paleo breakfast everyday for a week, then the following week I introduced paleo lunches, the following week paleo dinners, the following week allowing for only one cheat snack a day, then the next week I cut that out and fully paleo. This, for me, really worked. The transition to paleo was trouble-free and as such, completely sustainable :)

I agree with what everyone else said. It's normal. Cutting grains is the best thing to start with - and, IMO, the easiest. The sugar is hard (I sometimes use sugar or the pure stevia stuff). I also consume dairy in forms of organic yogurt mostly, and sometimes organic dairy milk.

I absolutely LOVE TJ's half and half (organic). It's..amazing.

I've gotten to the point now where I only eat breakfast, a snack, and dinner. It's awesome. My diary should be open if you'd like to get a feel for what I consume.

I agree with what everyone else has suggested here. You're likely just adjusting. Is there some reason why you're hanging on to that terrible creamer each morning? I'd try swapping it out with organic/grassfed full fat cream (if dairy doesn't bother you) or coconut milk.

Good luck and congrats on choosing a healthier lifestyle for yourself!

Molly, you are doing awesome! Do you have a blender? Dump that creamer down the drain girl! And then put 1t coconut oil 1t butter and 1T heavy cream in the blender with your coffee. P prepare to be floored by this treat!
Also don't sweat eating carbs but don't fear fat. Full fat dairy is where its at! You are doing great!
