Good Afternoon everyone!
Well so far I've had a good "food" weekend. That is a feat for me. We did go to my in-laws for a birthday supper, I had a piece of "crispy" chicken but only one piece. Would have been very easy to have had two. And a thin slice of birthday cake. But, I guess I just felt more in control....and when we got home I didn't have anything more. Often I do.
I also got a 6K run in yesterday and am soon planning to run today. Just waiting for lunch to settle. I had a good week last week and hope to do the same this week.
Ines - great on the fitness test, you are definitely getting stronger. I also have a water bottle with a strap, if I'm going on a longish run on a hot day I'll take that with me. The area I live in isn't terribly hot though, we live near the ocean and there is generally a breeze.
Laura - I love hearing about your runs...great job on the 14 miler! Phew. I have done 13.1 twice and can't imagine making it 13.2 LOL
sherry - hope the next 2 1/2 days goes quickly and dh is back before you know it!0 -
Good for you maureli with the food, I have done well considering we have company and eating out most of weekend...one night we followed the 27 yr olds to 3 different places, each they had drinks but I was already at my limit and had water. Was proud of self...
I slipped away and did my mini hike yesterday morning and jogged part of it since time was short...
Today after they leave if I have any life left, I am exhausted haven't rested in a month I feel like!!!! lol I will do something...I am thinking though rest day!!!
I was reading yesterday about water bottles...on my travels I needed water one day for a short hike and found this cool small bottle of 13 oz called Fred, yes you got that right, Fred!!! Looks and feels like a small whiskey plastic bottle, it is thin and fits better in my hand than my round water bottles...0 -
Thanks for all the water advice, you girls are awesome! We actually don't own any bottles since we drink tap water but if I get clearance to start running, I'll probably get a small one....I think I saw bottles with a strap/handle to carry that I guess would hold maybe 200 - 250 ml in the supermarket so that might be a good option. I don't like any of those sugary drinks (Getorade etc.) but water + juice would probably be a good option. Juice also replaces hydrolytes as far as I know... Hydration is definitely important to me since my body seems to require a lot of water and I get headaches if I don't drink enough.
For the next two weeks (i.e. until I see a physiotherapist) I put myself on a very low impact routine though since my ankle and knee have been hurting for a couple of days now and definitely need a break. I'm really scared of losing some of the progress that I made on the fitnessblender plans but I hope the programme I came up with will prevent that. I've been thinking to go swimming or "aqua jogging" once a week, three times Pilates, and three times a full body strength routine for which I looked up some fitnessblender videos that are lunge and squat free and contain mostly exercises for which my dumbbells are heavy enough. Before the Pilates and the strength training, I think I'll do some dance workout, a very short HIIT or some hula hoop, depending on how my ankle feels, as a warm up and to burn a few more calories. Then I'll talk to the physiotherapist about future dos and don'ts and about my shoe problem. And in August I might pay the uni sports fee for the new academic year in order to get access to their gym just because that would offer more possibilities for workouts that are light on the ankle (think more dumbbells to choose from and elliptical and rowing machine for ankle-friendly cardio that I could turn into ankle-friendly HIIT)... Just when I had started to actually enjoy doing HIIT...
Maureen and Marla, great job on being "good" despite the challenges of going out and having visitors!
Laura, congrats on the run yesterday!
Sherry, only 2 more days to go (right?), stay strong!
Valmaebel, welcome! I actually read about a study a while back that found that fat-free chocolate milk indeed is the perfect post-workout snack0 -
Oh, and if my math is correct here (is it?), my calorie burn (both TDEE and without training) is considerably higher than I would have thought and than I get from pretty much any calculator out there...
I just did the math for the last 30 days. I've been logging everything for most days, there are altogether maybe 5 days where I've eaten more. In this time I lost 2.5 kg. That means 17,500 kcal burned, i.e. 583.3 kcal burned per day.
My average calories per day were 1990.8 which would put my TDEE at a whopping 2.574 kcal. My net calories per day were 1702.7 which would still give me 2.286 kcal a day without exercise.
Considering that, besides my workouts, the only time I move during the day is (relaxed) cycling to and from uni and the supermarket, which is never more than about 20 minutes a day, I always chose sedentary as a setting, for which I get a TDEE of around 1,900 kcal. Seems like I actually burn around 300 kcal more a day though (since sedentary is obviously minus my workouts). I'm intrigued :bigsmile:0 -
workout complete!
8Km run, a bit over dressed at times when the sun showed itself, but all in all it went well. I am happy to have another 8K under my belt. I have been stuck on 5 and 6K for awhile now.
Now got to figure out what supper will be.0 -
So, I did a trail run yesterday and then biffed it big time. Bruised the top of my foot (probably the tendon), scraped most the skin off my left knee, slammed my palm on a rock catching myself so now the entire palm is blue and purple, and bruised my shoulder and elbow. So needless to say, my long run didn't happen this morning. A little disappointed about that...but still planning to lift some weights (modifying some and having to drop my squats since my ankle and knee can't handle that yet). My ankle is already greatly improved so I'm hoping this is just a temporary setback!
my eating was great all week...not so great today. I've always had the tendency to be an emotional eater and being banged up and unable to get out the way I want took it's toll a bit. But I remember when I used to eat a tub of ice cream in one sitting. Today my worst was eating animal crackers with my lunch and having lucky charms for breakfast. I still have come a long way!
So glad to be part of the group!0 -
Ines you're smart to listen to your body, even though it's frustrating when you've been making so much progress. But injuring yourself will just set you back further. The bottles I bring on my runs are reusable ones, not regular bottled water.
Sherry I bought the Gu version of those electrolyte tablets a few weeks ago (one tube of Orange and one of Lemon Lime). I've been filling 2 of my small bottles with that and 2 with Powerade on my longer runs. I still use some Powerade, because my trainer wants me taking in those extra calories while I'm running. I will be using the water/Powerade at the water stations during my race, not carrying my own, so I also want to train with as close to what I'll be consuming there as I can. At the training seminar the race put on they recommended even training with the flavor of Powerade they'll be using so you're used to that. The last time I was at the grocery store I found a small tub of it in powder form so I bought that. It was significantly less expensive per serving than the bottles, and it's smaller to store.
Marla your schedule sounds exhausting! I'll have to Google Fred.
Nice long run Maureen!
Valmaebel, ouch! Hope you're okay. That all sounds very painful. I used to be an emotional eater. I very rarely am anymore. Somewhere along the way I started turning to working out instead of eating when I was emotional, because I know when I'm done I'm going to actually feel better instead of worse like I would if I ate. Of course that's easier to do if you don't take yourself out while trail running.
It's just after 4:00pm here and I haven't made it to the gym yet today. I washed a couple of loads of laundry last night, got up early, threw a 3rd load in the washer, then hung them all out on the clothesline. It's been sunny and warm today. Cleaned the kitchen a bit, got the laundry put away after it was dry, and have dinner going in the crock pot, but otherwise have been fairly lazy. My calves and feet aren't super excited with me about my 14 mile (22.5K) run yesterday. I typically do low or non-impact cardio on Sundays anyway to give my body a bit of a break the day after my long run. It's a holiday weekend here and with the sunny & warm day I'm hoping the gym is fairly dead tonight, with people off having fun elsewhere.0 -
Hi everybody!!
Looks like I'm late to the party today. Great to see everyone. Good to see eating is being kept on track. I'll add myself to that list today. I did pretty good and even had a small ball of sugarfree, some-other-stuff-free (??gluten free or dairy free??, idk, I didn't pay attention) dark chocolate gelato with my kids, all within my limit. Thank goodness, because I had some bedtime "oopsies" this week (trouble sleeping, so I ate myself into a food coma, d'oh!). Nothing to report today workout-wise. Took my kids for a walk (and gelato) and then to play at the church (except there was a baptism party there, so we went farther along the path where the kids had congregated to play right at the Odeon theatre. I have been doing the occasional pushups and lightweight barbell lift these days: squats, shoulder press, cleans, but nothing to write home about--just trying to keep the muscles from turning to jelly before dh returns. In other news, there's a possibility we might be heading to the US for July. FIRST thing that popped into my head was: "I'm going to need to find a gym for that month." and "Oh no, I can't think of any place where I'd feel safe enough to run.". I'm especially blue about that 2nd one. My family live in a rural area and even in the nearest "city", drivers just do NOT expect to see pedestrians or runners and it doesn't seem safe. The thoughts of a track or treadmill make me sad, so idk what I'll do. But first I have to see if our travel plans pan out I guess.
Anyway, have a good one and see y'all tomorrow!0 -
What state is your family in Sherry?
I almost always run in what is probably considered a rural area. Rarely do I run on city streets just because I don't like having to worry about intersections or traffic. I live in town (population about 10,000 so a smaller city) but closer to the outskirts, so within half a mile it's less populated and by a mile out sometimes I can run for a mile or two without seeing a single vehicle. I'm more comfortable running where there are fewer cars. Yesterday I got rammed by a dog for the first time - not even a block from my house. Lady was in her yard across the street and her dog (mid-sized black lab or something along those lines) charged me. I wasn't overly concerned but it turned its body when it got close and body slammed my hip. Good thing I was braced for impact or it may have knocked me over. Meanwhile the woman didn't even look at me, much less apologize. She was just yelling at her dog to come back.0
