1 week post VSG

And I feel great. Between the pre-surgery diet and being on liquids post-surgery, I've lost 25 lbs in two weeks.
I wish someone had prepared me for the extreme nausea post-surgery. Seriously, they pumped me full of anti-nausea meds before surgery and for the first two days after, and I still felt like I had the stomach bug. So glad that part is over
Also, I wish I had more instruction on how to drink liquids without swallowing so much air. I never realized it before, but it can be an issue now!

I had the same issue with swallowing air. They tell us not to use a straw to avoid this, but for me, using the straw actually was better. I had to prove it to my nutritionist though. My advice? Try a straw and see if it's better for you. If you get the same amount of air or more, don't use it.0

I'm curious on the air swallowing issue. After WLS can you no longer burp? I am on track to get VSG in the fall and I find I am able to drink a lot more water when I use a straw vs just drinking our of a bottle.0

The air swallowing is a problem because it hurts a little, until the air comes back up.
I have found that using a straw helps! Thanks for the tip. I was also told not to use a straw because it would add air, but maybe that is not true for everyone.

Glad you are doing great. I was not nauseated post surgery. The only time I was, was from the pain meds, so I stopped using them. I wasn't in pain anyhow. More like discomfort more than anything.
RE Straws... my nutritionist said some people are better on straws, some are worse. Experiment. I can drink my liquids either way and don't have much of a problem with either.0 -
I used a straw from the start. It was the one bit of my surgeon's advice that I ignored. Sorry about the nausea. For me it lasted a few days. I hope you're feeling better soon.0

I'm actually better with straws too! I have a hard time burping, and when I do it's a little at a time. It's quite uncomfortable until the pressure goes away. I often say "I just wish I could down a coke and BELCH" lol0

My surgical team taught us to sip, sip, sip. I had almost a year to practice. Was fortunate to NEVER have vomiting or nausea. I am 20 months post op RNY and still have never had these issues. I still sip, never gulp or take big drinks. I sip water all day long, minus the 30 minutes before or after eating. Burping is something that doesn't happen easily, if at all. It's something you get used to. Straws don't bother me, nor do sips of fountain diet sodas once in a great while. Of course, these are SIPS.
As for pain meds, because of problems with them with previous surgeries (severe nausea and vomiting for weeks after) my surgeon used a pain pump that I was able to remove myself 10 days after I got home. Never even needed Tylenol.
Hope things improve for you and congrats on the weight loss and your choice to improve your health!0 -

Yes we can burp. At first it was difficult, but it got easier. In fact for me that "I need to burp" sensation is my cue that my meal is done and I need to stop eating. Even if I do indeed burp, I am still done eating because anything after I feel that way is too much and will come back up.
Good luck with everything this fall! This is a great tool and I am so glad I have it.0
