The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 days per week for a total of 150 minutes. And according to the Mayo Clinic, “The exercise does not need to be athletic or difficult. Studies have shown that simply walking at a brisk pace for 30 minutes or more on most days can lead to significant health improvements. Add simple strengthening exercises two or three times a week and the benefits are even greater.
Some of the benefits of doing 30 minutes of exercise a day:
• Lowers blood pressure
• Improves cholesterol
• Prevents or manages type 2 diabetes
• Manages weight
• Prevents osteoporosis
• Prevents cancer
• Maintains mental well-being
• Increases energy and stamina
Something is always better than nothing!
Remember, everyone has to start somewhere. Even if you've been sedentary for years, today is the day you can begin to make healthy changes in your life. If you don't think you'll make it for 30 minutes, set a reachable goal for today. You can work up toward your overall goal by increasing your time as you get stronger. Don't let all-or-nothing thinking rob you of doing what you can every day.
