Okey this is a dumb question and has with the understanding of english.
When I read the explanation of the word hiking it say "walk for a long distance, esp. across country or in the woods."
My question is then, how long is long distance.
Til now I used the word when ever I take my dog for a walk up in the wood or on the mountains.

Thanks for the article - this part made me LOL: "Hiking is actually just walking, only on dirt or rocks or other uneven surfaces. Or walking where an animal larger than you can kill and eat you." I guess that makes me a hiker!

Sivangj: It is not a dumb question! I think that there are probably as many definitions of hiking as their are hikers. I think of it in terms of this: if I feel the need to put on my hiking boots, then it's a hike.

You are not alone. Before I was into hiking, I didn't understand it either, and was even intimidated. So I went out hiking with this woman once, and afterwards I said, "This is hiking?! That is just walking in nature!" She just rolled her eyes and said, "That is what hiking is."
