Rock City
Mt. Diablo State Park
Have you ever dreamed of scaling Mt. Everest or wondered what it would be like to explore the ancient Mayan caves? You may not have a chance to travel the world and conquer these feats but you can get a taste of it locally. Rock City, located in Mt. Diablo State Park is an adventure-filled and family friendly area made of unusually large sandstone formations and caves. An exciting way to get in your 30 minutes of exercise!
What you need to know:
Where it is: Accessed through the south entrance in Danville and next to the Live Oak Campground. Trailhead near campsite 20.
Parking: $10 per vehicle at the park entrance. Plenty of parking at the campsite.
Dogs: No dogs allowed on trails.
Things to do:
Hiking: There are miles of trails that surround Rock City with varying levels of difficulty. Try the Mary Bowerman Trail, a moderate 0.7 mile loop.
Climbing: You don’t have to have experience to climb through, on and under the numerous rock structures and caves at Rock City. Don’t forget to trek up the many natural stone staircases too!
