Improve run time?

Hello all!

I'm currently active Army and I've been in for almost three years now. Ever since I did my first 1-1-1 for MEPs (only had been working out for about a month at that time!) I've struggled with my run. My genes aren't helping me; I'm short (5' 5") and stocky and so have been the last couple generations on my father's side. Prior to joining I weighed in at about 220lbs and am now down to 176lbs; I'm continuously working on shedding more weight. I have 17:00 to run two miles and my average time is roughly 16:30. I'd like to start with a sub-16:00 and possibly work my way down to under 15 minutes. If I can accomplish that, I'd be extremely satisfied.

I'm looking for member tips and tricks that might help. Techniques, running workouts, super foods, etc. Anything and everything. Also, if there is anyone else who has a similar body type to mine who has accomplished this goal I'd like to hear your story. My section is a fan of running long distances and a single, high grade hill for PT--I usually take lead of the formation because I'm the slowest joe, but I don't want to be that guy any more!

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked out PT365? They have some running plans that might help. Thankfully I can pass a PT test, I just need to shave 10 seconds off my run to make 70 percent! . I've also taken up swimming in conjunction with running. Not sure if this helps (or If you'll have the extra time being active), but good luck! Also make sure you're on top of your running shoes. The Asics I had to wear in basic were horrible! I was recommended Brooks at a specialty store, and it made a load of difference.
