What do you run with?

I used to run with just my phone to mark distance and intervals, and a 1l bottle of water. Lately I've been experimenting with bringing my dog and some music along. I'm not sure I liked the music part, but the dog part was pretty fun, so I'll bring her again. However now that I'm starting to get into some longer (for me) runs, I'm not sure I need to bring the water bottle. I'm generally running/walking for a little over half an hour. If I have the water bottle, I do drink steadily. But I've noticed lately that drinking while on my runs seems to be sapping my energy a bit, and it causes my stomach to feel heavy and painful. Am I drinking too much? On relatively short runs like these, do I even need to bring water?

On short runs I generally don't bring a water bottle (which is usually anything under an hour), unless it is really hot outside (90+). If drinking water is sapping some of your energy then yes, you maybe drinking a bit too much during your run. I generally only carry a 16 oz bottle and it will last me an entire hour, I only sip as I drink.
As for your dog, just make sure you are planning stops for her to drink water as well. Either by letting her take a drink from a pond or a doggy fountain. I generally only run with my dogs at the off leash park close to my house, so they are free to splash through the water when we get close to the lakes.
I don't run with music unless it is a long solo run (anything +90 minutes). I have slowly adapted to not requiring music when I run. Unless it is on a treadmill...I always need music on a treadmill lol.0 -
I don't bring water unless it's over 30C (86f). I hate carrying it around. On short runs you don't need to bring water with you unless it's really hot.
I only ever bring my phone which I put in an armband. I listen to music and use an app that maps my runs.0 -
I usually just being my phone, id & house key. I use to take my water bottle with me but got tired of carrying it around. I just make sure I drink a glass our two before I leave the house.
I use my phone for the c25k & map my run apps. As well as music. I always have music going no matter what. Music really helps with my cadence as well. Being a musician I tend to go with the beat.0 -
I also don't carry water. I have a drink before going out and when I get back. I go out for about 60-90 minutes.
I carry my ipod for music and, if no one is home to let me back in, a house key. When I'm on-call, I have a small fanny pack to carry my phone and pager as well.0 -
Most of the time, I run pushing a jogging stroller with my youngest in it. Since I have that, I throw my water bottle in there, although I don't really drink a lot while I'm running. The stroller has an area for my phone, which I really like. If I'm running one of the c25k days, I have that app going plus Endomondo because I tend to go longer than the c25k app so I want that info linked to mfp.
I also have a Garmin Forerunner 220 that I use. The calories shown on the Garmin are usually quite a bit lower than through Endomondo so I go back and modify the mfp entry to reflect the Garmin calories.
I know this seems like app overkill but I like getting data from multiple sources!
If I run alone, I have a belt to put my phone in so I can still run the apps and listen to music. I don't take water if I run alone.0 -
Just my phone and wireless headphones. Carrying a water bottle would be so annoying to me. Its only 30-45 minutes!0

I have a clinch bag with my ipad for my c25k app, and sports podcasts, then use a my phone for gps tracking. Also throw a sweatshirt in there0

When I was doing C25K I was generally finishing a 500ml bottle of water during a session. As I've become more adapted to running I now don't generally take water for anything under 10K/ 1 hour. You will find that as you improve you just won't need it.
As far as everything else is concerned, I genreally have my phone in an arm pouch, running Endomondo and Strava. I don't run with music nowadays, it was useful when I was doing C25K but now it gets in the way of enjoyng the session.
When I'm out for a longer run I have a waist pouch with two 500ml bottles and a pouch for gels/ keys.0 -

Im curious; why Endomondo And Strava? I use Endomondo myself; curious if there are better apps.0 -
I live in Southern California, so it does get quite hot here. However I try to go running in the mornings, before it gets killer hot here. Maybe as the summer progresses and we have 95+ degree nights I might have to find an alternative. I think that carrying a 1L bottle and drinking half of it before I'm done running is probably too much. My runs are only about 35 minutes, and most of the time is spent walking with short run intervals. My dog is a german shepherd/ spaniel mix, so she has the long shepherd fur and undercoat, with the curls and feathers of a spaniel. I probably do need to be careful of her as the weather heats up.0

They have different capabilities. My half marathon training plan is in Endomondo, and I like the performance analytics, but Strava has some interesting competitive elements; segments that you end up directly compared with others.
I use Runkeeper as well, as that's got all of my history in it. I'm finding that it's not stable at the moment though.0 -
I really like to travel light.
Shorter runs it's usually just my GPS watch and car key if I didn't start off from home. (and clothing of course).
Medium runs I'll sometimes carry a cell phone.
Usually don't carry water with me at all. On my longest runs, I'll keep some water in the trunk of car and every few miles will loop back, hit the key fob to open the trunk as I approach, then quickly grab the bottle, drink a few swallows, slam the trunk shut, them am off and running again.0 -
I just bring my phone and some earphones. I did just buy a collapsible water bottle that clips on and holds a small amount so I can take it with me on the longer runs on the really hot/high humidity days but I haven't had to bring it yet.0
