Hi Another Question - Sleep Issues

Hello,

Since my surgery I am able to fall asleep but I wake up between 3:30 and 4:30 am every morning and I am wide awake. Is this because of the protein diet? is this normal? I am tired and just cannot get enough sleep.....

I don't know about the early waking up. My guess is that your body clock is just out of whack as a result of the surgery and it will eventually resume normal operations :) In the meantime, why not figure out how to take advantage of being awake that early and schedule an afternoon nap to compensate.

Being tired is normal, especially right after surgery when you are still healing, but also because of the restricted (low cal) diet and malabsorbtion (if you had RNY). Vitamins are essential! You might want to check with your doc. Perhaps you need to adjust your vitamin regimen.

How far post-op are you? I found that after a few months, when I had recovered, and had lost significant weight, that I didn't need to sleep at long each night.

I used to need a minimum of 8 hours a night to be functional, and now I'm wide awake after about 6 hours. I'm not sure if it's the weight loss, or the fact that I'm in the gym more often. But I can go to bed later, takes me less time to fall asleep, and I need only about 6 or 6.5 hours of sleep to feel rested. It's weird and Ii'm still getting used to it even 21 months post op.
