Making Fitness Fun
One of the biggest factors in both starting and sticking to any fitness program is the amount of inherent enjoyment that comes from doing it. Not only does it cure boredom – one of the main reasons for drop-out rates - but it actively promotes positive mind-body connections. Try these fun fitness ideas for the 30 Minutes o Fit Challenge.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
What it is: An off shoot of traditional surfing, Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) uses large sized surf boards and paddles to navigate any body of water.
Why it’s great: SUP delivers a full body workout and is a great cross-training activity. You’ll work your core, legs, back and arms all while improving strength and balance. In 2013, SUP had the highest rate of first time participants than any other sport.
Where to go: There are several companies throughout the Bay Area that offer both rentals and classes. Try 101 Sports in San Rafael. Rentals are $20 per hour or $60 for the day. www.101surfsports.com
Boxing
What it is: Boxing for fitness takes all the awesome elements of boxing training without the grueling physical contact.
Why it’s great: A true total body workout that quickly develops high cardiovascular endurance and full body strength. Boxing teaches a valuable skill (self defense) and is arguably one of the best stress relieving activities out there.
Where to go: There are a few boxing only gyms in the area and a large percentage of martial arts schools offer classes as well. For easy access to boxing for fitness, try UFC Gyms in Walnut Creek and Concord where group boxing classes are held. www.ufcgym.com
