Seasick and lost in ocean swim..... happy anyways!

Did a sprint on Saturday..... BFAST in Mayport, Florida. The seas were rough, no real rip tide but lots of choppy waves. My swim was shallow so we were right in the rolling waves. So, I got a little seasick. They also had to remove the last buoy after my wave started so I (along with a lot of other women) got lost towards the end. My swim was horrible! I couldn't even muster up the strength to run to the bike. So, I walked to the bike and had a longer than normal transition. But my bike was fast (for me) and my run was awesome! I missed placing in my age group by 30 seconds. 30 seconds! Oh well! Thrilled anyways!
Here are my splits:
.25 mile swim (including a .2 mile run to transition): 11:16 (slow!)
transition 1: 3:56
16.8 mile bike: 56:38
transition 2: 1:01
3.4 mile run: 31:56
Not too shabby! Can't wait for Beach Blast in September!

With the bike and run segments sounds like you had a great day. You are right to be positive about your results. IMO, Tri's are all about having fun while achieving a level of fitness that others can only dream of. Also, the thrill you felt comes across in the post.
Notwithstanding, here's a little tough (message board) love. You should tighten up those transition times. If you had squeezed 31 seconds out of T2 you would have been on the podium. Also, I recommend getting right back in the same (or similar) body of water this week. ideally, try to swim under the same conditions. Ask some friends to tag along. You've got to battle the OW beast and grab it by the throat. The more you race the more likely you will encounter difficult situations. Learn from the tough times so you can flourish later on. Sometimes you have to embrace a failure so it won't happen again.
Sounds like you have the engines and desire...now just add a little more experience Good luck in September!0 -
Thanks! My first transition I purposely took my time.... I was so uncomfortable after the swim that I wanted to take my time and regain my composure. I know where I can shave time. I've spent half my life watching my mom do tris, but I am still very much a rookie and I am still just competing against myself and figuring out what I am capable of. My race in September is another ocean swim, so I'm not going to let it beat me again!0
