I have both. I would definitely say a HR monitor because it is super accurate. I love my fitbit but the calories count is way off.

Get an HRM. After all you are more interested in how much you burn during a workout, right? And unless you have turned your life around completely - walking more, being more active and so on, you really don't need a FitBit or anything like this. I was very tempted by Garmin's VivoFit and almost got it, but then I thought - I walk the same amount more or less every day, the new changes are my eating habits and my new workout regime - for the first I got MFP, for the second I invested into a Polar FT7, which I love. And in the end if I'm curious about walking steps - I've got a $5 pedometer that is just about as accurate as all of the Fit's 150+ worth bracelets.

With my HRM I found out that I'm still not fit enough to workout in my burning fat heart rate zone, but I'm seeing improvement day by day beat by beat in my overall workouts. Started from max HR of 177, two weeks later I'm at max HR of 170 with the same amount of effort.
