Treading water for Kung Fu

My Kung Fu instructor has asked me to spend 5 minutes per swim treading water with my body as high out of the water as possible (preferably with the tops of my hips above the surface) so that I can get stronger for his classes. I haven't tried this yet but it sounds like being both very hard and great fun at the same time.

I am going to get some funny looks in the pool tomorrow when I give this a go. I am not even sure if this can be done - my instructor always gets you to try the impossible so you make as much effort as you can. Will keep you posted on my little challenge.

I am not sure if you can even get that high,

In swimming we were required to keep our shoulders above the water.

I agree - its typical of my kung fu instructor to ask for something that can't be done in order to make you do the aboslute max that you can. I didn't make it to the pool today so couldn't try it - that will have to wait until monday now.

You would have to have some amazing leg strength & balance for that to even be possible, since your whole upper body would have to be up out of the water your legs would have to do all the work. If he wants your legs to get stronger you can tread while putting first 1 hand above your head (all the way up, like looking to answer a question in class), then the other & then both up. It really forces your legs to work......
