MFP Cardio Calories Burned FYI

Hello everyone.

Today I got my heart rate monitor back from being serviced and I'm SO excited! When I started logging my cardio workouts on MFP I had a suspicion that I wasn't getting enough "credit" for my work. Well, my suspicions were true. Long story short, on my 70 minute walk today (with a little jogging thrown in) I burned almost twice the calories that MFP gave me credit for.

I realize that MFP does the best they can and they can only paint broad strokes with their calorie burn estimates and I appreciate what they do. However if you want to know how many calories you are REALLY burning, you should get a heart rate monitor.

Heart rate monitors are pretty expensive and might be out of the price range of a lot of people, but if you can save up and get one - they're almost worth their weight in gold.

If anyone is thinking about buying a heart rate monitor and wants my 2 cents worth (again, I am NO expert) I'll be glad to offer you my opinion. I don't recommend buying a used or an off brand, just send me a personal message about it if you're interested.

I just wanted to share my findings about MFP Cardio Calories Burned with the group.

I hope everyone is having a great day!

Keep on logging and exercise when you can!

  • Thank you so much Marty, I appreciate that. I never used heart rate monitors much because I could barely walk and already be at my limit, so I just decided not to use them. But I have heard that if you use them properly, unlike me, that it really does help your body burn off fat, and not muscle. So I agree it is definitely something to look into. Thank you so much, it really means a lot that you would take the time to sit down and write it out and not just keep it to yourself. I hope you had a great day and keep up the good work :)
