In an attempt to inject some personality into my life I have purchased color socks. I'm am disappointed they did not have orange, but blue, neon yellow and pink will have to do till I need more.

So, colored socks make me happy.

LOL...Pat...it is the simple things in life that do it for us!!

Things that make me happy in no particular order:
-The time immediately following rain..the smell and the way the rain cleans the trees/vegetation etc.
-My cats......(usually they make me happy....except the one that is YOWLING at the top of his lungs at the moment!)
-Being at my home when I go on leave and get back to AZ
    -Swimming
-Being with my parents and siblings and their kids
    -Watching movies
    -DisneyWorld

Those are off the top of my head!

    Have a great day!!

    What makes me happy?

When Jim gets me laughing so hard I snort.

Spending a day with Skippy McGrape.

    Swimming.

    Snuggling with the cat.

    A good book.

    A visit from my sister.

    Tired muscles after a workout.

    Salad in a pita.

Oh, I am so happy today I am going to explode!!!

The daughter of a friend (my adopted "niece") got her absolute dream teaching job! She's been having trouble getting a permanent position, so I worked with her this summer on interview skills and helped her re-vamp her resume, cover letter, and teaching statement, and she nailed it! Yay!!!

Thanks, Nancy! I'm so thrilled for her, and happy that my help may have made all the difference.

Something I should be working on is a list of what activities bring me joy and make me feel useful, as I know once I have my surgery, I'm not going to be able to use food any more to fill the holes. I've certainly made a lot of progress in the last six months, although it's still a struggle, and sometimes I fail. Last night I lost to half a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter. I'd been obsessing about it all evening, then waited until after midnight so I could put it on today's food diary and work them it off with a long swim. Is that progress or failure? I don't know, really. I suppose the progress part is that I recorded the food and have a plan. I also didn't go into a full-tilt binge and eat everything in the house. And I didn't wake up this morning thinking, "Yeah, let's have a cheat day since you've already blown it." The failure part was giving in to the cravings instead of just drinking some more water and going to bed.

So... using the happiness list as a start, I'm going to start my bigger list, maybe pull it out when the cravings hit so I can fill my mind and heart instead :/ of my belly.

  • Hi guys! I know I was just invited in and leaving on vacation tomorrow, but I will be back! Love your spirit and camaraderie here! Looking forward to getting to know you better.

    Happiness for me:

My family. My kids are a gift and I never take them for granted, and my husband is my best friend.

My first summer off, starting student teaching in the fall after 26 years of working nights weekends and holidays.

Cross stitching. I haven't done it since before my daughter was born, taking classes and lack of time. I just started again to give me some of my own time and pleasure back. Loving it.

Reading for pleasure. After years of bachelors and masters classes I just picked up my first book for pleasure and I missed it.

The ocean/beach. I love any time I can spend there. Swimming, building sand castles with the kids, fishing, walking.

    Vacations!! ;)

Fishing. Something I haven't really done since my dad died of cancer 12 years ago. I am getting the kids involved now and even though they haven't caught their first fish we are having so much fun trying. I want my kids to camp and fish and I don't want to be the mom that sits on her *kitten*....so it makes me happy we are incorporating the more active stuff in our lives again.

I am sure there are others. Great thread, because like you all have said we need to remind ourselves that things other than food can make us happy.

And Karen, awesome about your niece. I think I will be hitting you up for advice as I proceed in my career as well. ;)

Not sure how much I will be on during my vacation. Leaving tomorrow, fishing Monday at Lake isabella, day trip to death valley and then Henderson, near Las Vegas, for a few nights of laying in the sun. I packed healthy snacks, but also some not so healthy treats for the family. I do okay on vacations, but it is harder when ordering out. I am committed to making the best choices though. I will still try to log in my foods every day.

Have a great week! And keep up the good work!!

Would be interested to hear about Henderson....myself and two friends are planning our trip in the US over Xmas and they want to go to Vegas...but I saw there is sort of a resort in Henderson that I thought might be interesting and then I could rent a car and get us to Vegas and the strip. Anyone have any thoughts on this???

Shari, have fun on your vacation! Will look forward to getting to know you, too, and helping with the teaching portfolio!

Today was a meh day. I swam, but not the long one I needed. I stuck to my calorie goals, sort of... I didn't eat back all of my exercise points but enough of them to make a good dent. That's what happens when hubby bats his baby blues and asks me to cook something other than a lean cuisine. Tomorrow he'll be off on a motorcycle adventure, so I'll get a long swim in and eat more salad in a pita. Next week we start our plant patrol full lake survey (we have a team of 16 people who snorkel or scope the entire littoral zone of the lake (where the plants grow) to look for invasive species like milfoil), so both Jim and I will be putting in some serious swim and snorkel time.

I hope everyone is out having awesome adventures this weekend. I expect Pat is rocking his new socks on a marathon bike ride, Zac is kicking someone's tennis *kitten*, Norah has probably walked to Virginia and back and Dee is right behind her, Nancy is jogging in the compound being chased by feral cats who want the bits of chicken she has stuffed in her pockets, Diana is playing marco polo with her kids in the pool, Heather has organized a neighborhood pony ride/dog show/egg peeling contest. We know where Shari is... getting a suntan in Death Valley. Ummm... why does that sound horrifying to me? Now where are the others... Sarah? Heather's Mom? Mel? As for me, I'm off to bed EARLY to try and get up early and seize the day. Carpe Diem, Carpe Vegium (seize the Veggies), Carpe Aquafinum (seize the water bottle).

    'Night all!

  • Karen...You are too funny!

I had a good day. We went to a kids birthday party and I wasn't too tempted. I had some street tacos to eat, better for me than the pizza. I gave in to about 15 mini jelly beans and a small taste of my husbands twinkie. I didn't eat the cake or the candy from the pinata or anything from the amazing dessert table though. That said I stayed under my 1500 cal goal. But, I didn't exercise either. It's okay though, I have been averaging 6 days a week and I needed to pack for the trip and stuff.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend and week ahead. Remember, "Eat to live, don't live to eat!" That is my motto anyway. Shari
