August 9th is their Birthday!
Betty Boop is 82 years old today! Originally drawn as a curvaceous Jazz Era flapper, Betty was given a "makeover" in 1934 when the Legion of Decency complained of too much skin and too much innuendo in the cartoons! Happy birthday, Betty!
Smokey Bear was born on August 9, 1944, when the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council agreed that a fictional bear named Smokey would be the symbol for their joint effort to promote forest fire prevention. Happy 70th birthday, Smokey!
