My name is Kristin and I am new to this group and starting the Paleo eating lifestyle. I am also counting calories to start (requested by my dr). I really struggle with my weight and have since I was a kid. I am addicted to food and could use all of the support I could get and that's why I joined this group!

Welcome Kristin. I hope you enjoy this lifestyle. I've been Paleo for two years.

Keep in mind that nutritional advice from doctors generally isn't the best. I hope that you aren't restricting your calories too much because it will cause problems in the long run. For me, I brought my calorie and scale obsession into Paleo for the first year and a half, followed MFP calorie settings (and even higher) which turned out to be far too little food, and I lost much lean body mass and slowed my metabolism. I am now eating healthier but am gaining weight while my body recovers from the prolonged period of under-eating.

It's best to approach this lifestyle as a permanent one and focus on HEALTH first and foremost.

Does the docotr want you to count calories or track calories? There is a difference. I log to see what range I am eating to know if i need to make adjustments. I don't "count" so that I eat only "x" number of calories. A lot of times doctors or dietitians want you to "track" what you are eating to get a picture of how you are eating and see where changes could be made to improve results and nutrition.

My doctor suggested keeping around 1500 calories everyday. So do you think that eating Paleo I would easily go over 1500 calories? I would think it would be difficult to reach 1500 calories just because of all of the natural and healthy foods. (no grains, dairy, or sugars) Am I way off?

I natuarlly eat around 1300-1500 calories eating this way, so depending on your hunger level you should be okay. Some people will under eat so be careful not to fall into that trap.

How long have you been doing Paleo? I've tried it once before and I think I fell off band wagon because my hubby doesn't eat Paleo and can pretty much eat whatever he wants. Do you have any recipes that you really like using Paleo?

I have been follwoing the paleo template since August 2009, so a long time. We eat mostly simple meals, I cook meat and veggies and then add things for htenon-paleo fmaily members if needed. I do eat both white potatoes and rice a few times a week, so that makes meal choices easier. On work days I almost always just broil/bake some meat and steam a veggie on the side. On weekends I am more adventurous and do recipes when I have more time. We also eat "slop" frequently which is ground meat wiht spices and some type of liquid cooked with rice and frozen veggies. It is quick and easy and my kids enjoy it.

I will have to try that 'slop' out. Assuming in the crock pot? Thanks for the ideas!

In my never humble opinion, with 80 pounds to lose 1500 is WAY TOO LOW (usual advice from doctors). I think it might be more useful to focus on food quality, macros, and letting your body dictate how much you need, which it will do when it is properly nourished.

I know everyone wants to lose weight fast, but losing lean body mass (the scale can't tell you when it's lbm or fat) really sucks. Eating too little and having too aggressive a weight loss goal does not lead to ideal health for the long term.

Good suggestions here. I found "Well Fed" and "Well Fed 2" with the suggestions for meal planning and cooking ahead to be really helpful.

Another thing I do is, when I make rice for my family, I often stir up cauliflower rice for myself. I've come to prefer the cauliflower rice version to actual rice, as a matter of fact.

p.s. Look at the "Recommended Reading" sticky topic for websites and cookbooks.

I should mention tha tyou can make hte "slop" or "hamburger helper" without the rice and cook rice on the side for the family to help bulk up the meal and stretch the budget. It is great over cauliflower...either riced or just steamed. That way you get two veggie servings, one in the meat itself (zuchinni works well) and then in the "rice".

I eat rice or potatoes on days when I am more active. Not necessarily just a heavy workout, but even if I have a busy day at work. It makes me feel better.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I like anything that is easy to make not to mention something that my hubby will actually eat. If he could eat pizza every meal he probably would. (and he doesn't gain a lb) :(

One of hte best pizza crust recipes. It is high in carbs, but for a change of pace from other things it is worth it.
