Blood Sugar after Meals

Usually I only check my BG levels in the morning, after fasting all night. Usually they are pretty high (140). So I figured I would try checking my blood sugar after meals.

90 minutes after a 500 calorie (40 carb) lunch my blood sugar was 113.

So is this good, or isn't it?

  • The American Diabetes Association guidelines for blood sugar 1-2 hours after a meal is <180, so your post-meal blood sugar is in a great range. It's not uncommon for people with Type 2 diabetes to have a higher fasting blood glucose due to the liver making more glucose due to an increase in hormones early in the morning. There's more information here: http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/treatment-and-care/blood-glucose-control/dawn-phenomenon.html and this is an excellent discussion to have with your physician. ~Lynn /Glucerna

113 after a 40g carb lunch is about par for the course with me. Dinner/lunch, it's about the same. Sometimes I'll be mid 120's or in the 90's depending on the day. Less than 180 is the standard, but I spent some time just figuring out what I usually am and trying to stay within MY normal. Then I know I'm staying on track between A1C checks. 113 is pretty good for a Diabetic, so you're doing well.

I think it's pretty good. Mine was 112 this morning 2 hours after breakfast, but I had 72 carbs (600 cal). The American Diabetes Association does say <180 1-2 hours after meals but most other places I've looked says 140.

I'm not really a fan of the ADA. In my opinion they are not aggressive enough. 180 is way too high in my opinion. It's like they're afraid to say it like it is. For every one person like us who's trying to make improvements, I'd wager there are 10 who eat what they want because they are on meds.

My doctor tells me nothing over 140 an hour after eating. I've only hit above 140 once which I immediately went for a brisk 20 minute walk.

I like the ADA but I do agree that 180 is too high. I have been trying to make improvements since I was diagnosed in April. I started on 2 - 500mg Metformin a day with 1 - glipizide. Then after a month the doctor dropped the glipizide since it was dropping me too low. Since then I'm suppose to be on 3 Metformins a day. The past couple of weeks I dropped it myself to 2 per day because it's become way too easy lately to eat what I want because I'm on meds, just like you said. I think most doctors figure patients are going to eat whatever they want so they keep them as much meds. I don't want to been on all kinds of meds every day. I also have to take a blood pressure pill in the morning, lisinopril 20mg and a metoprolol 50mg at night.

I've been eating upwards of 200 carbs per day. I would have to eat over 100 carbs for one meal for it to even get over 120. My doctor didn't give me any blood sugar numbers to aim for. I've just learned my mom being diabetic for so long and A LOT of internet research. Walking/exercise helps a lot too!

I'm with you on this. The targets I aim for is <120/dl 2 hour PP and I often test (new foods or amounts) 1 hour post to make sure I am on a decline by the time hour number 2 rolls around. I don't like a huge spread, so I prefer to see <120mg/dl at the 1 hour mark but will take it at the 2 hour mark.

For what it's worth, 20 jumping jacks makes my blood sugar drop like a stone. Occasionally, I find myself at 130 mg/dl & at that point, the jumping jack trick & 25 minutes later usually ends me up at close to my fasting for that day. :drinker:
