Bulletproof Coffee...

Okay... finally got around to trying it. I was skeptical so I didn't go with buying the MTC or brain octane oil, I just used organic coconut oil instead. Though I did use Kerrygold unsalted grass fed butter. And I must say... it was the most disgusting thing I've ever had. The first sip was awful. So I said "Okay, I wasn't expecting that... now that I know what to expect, I'm going to try it again." And I did... I took three more swigs, and I gagged. -sulks- I'm very sad, I really wanted to like it.
So then I tried it with unsweetened cocoa and some stevia. Gagged again.
After that, I gave up.

So... guess my question is... would I be able to add in my low carb mocha mix to this coffee concoction and get a similar effect? lol I have this "Big Train Low Carb Mocha mix" that tastes pretty decent... if I added that to the drink, think it would still help? Though I know the whole point of the coffee is to reduce/minimize toxins, and adding a processed mocha mix to it probably defeats the purpose, but hell... I'd still be getting the health benefits of the oils and butter, I figure.
Or perhaps I should just make an omlette in the morning using the oil/butter. lol

What do yall think?

I add ground cinnamon to it, but mostly cause i love ground cinnamon

dont see why you couldnt use a cocoa powder or something for a chocolate taste but depending on the process of the powder it may be bitter too

    =/

Try it anyway see how it goes and let us know!

What amounts of coconut oil, butter, coffee did you use? Did you mix it with a blender? How do you drink your coffee otherwise? For me, it's a plus since otherwise I drink coffee either black or with cream only, no sweetener.

I love the flavors and texture, I add coconut oil, kerrygold, and unsweetened cocoa, and beat the daylights outta it with my immersion blender till it's frothy. And when I have it, I have it for breakfast, in lieu of eating a meal, it's calorie dense.

The benefit is in the coconut oil (MCTs) and grass fed butter (CLA). Both assist with fat metabolism. If you can get these in other ways (meals, supplements, etc.), you're benefitting without having to force it. That's what I did before I started making BPC - but dang, it surprised me, I like it.

Yuck. I don't think I could ever drink that stuff again lol

oyadancing - I did 2TB of Kerrygold unsalted grass fed butter, and 1TB of organic coconut oil, and some ground arabica coffee I had laying around. I mixed it in a blender until frothy like the directions told me to. First one was just plain like that, then I tried adding unsweetened cocoa and some stevia, but yuck. None of it worked, still gagged lol I might just have to stick to my low carb mocha mix... or find some other low carb coffee drink where I could incorporate the fats.

Just checking: You brewed the coffee, yes? (picturing how horrible just ground coffee, butter and coconut oil would be! yack!)

There's all kinds of ways to add fats without BPC: Cheese, heavy cream, cream cheese, meat that has fat on it (bacon, chicken with skin, chops, short ribs). Best of luck!

I have stopped adding butter to my bulletproof coffee. I just do about 10 ounces of brewed coffee and mix in about a tablespoon of coconut oil and some stevia. I like the taste better without the butter. I don't blend it, just let everything melt. Some days I add this zero calorie liquid coffee flavoring that is like Mio but for your coffee. So not 100% accurate, but still a good way to get more fat into my diet.

I used to put cream in my coffee. Then I tried coconut oil and butter like everyone suggested and it was like black coffee with an oil slick on top. Terrible. Then I tried the coconut oil and butter with cream ... better, but still too oily.

Finally, my mother in law gave me a stick blender. Now I have coffee with coconut oil and butter, blended really well. It goes the colour of coffee with milk in it, and is no longer oily. I don't use the cream anymore. If I have one in the morning, I'm fine til lunch time.

I was sceptical about bulletproof coffee too, but eventually my curiousity got the better of me, lol.

I haven't tried the original recipe, as the thought of that much butter in my coffee is a turn-off to be honest, but I do make and like a version with 1 cup of brewed coffee, 1.5 teaspoons of coconut oil, and 0.5 teaspoons of butter. I put the lot in a heated mug, and whizz it up a little with a stick blender, and find it quite tasty to be honest.

I think part of it will depend on if you are the sort of person who likes cream in your coffee. My dad can't stand cream in his coffee, and am sure would hate this, but I enjoy cream in a coffee sometimes, usually when I was hungry, before I ever tried low-carb, lol.

To be honest fat in coffee is a common combination I think (full fat latte anyone ?), so it wasn't such a leap for me to try it. The thing that surprised me was that I actually liked it! lol. The 3:1 ratio of coconut oil to butter is probably a decent part of that though, and as someone who likes to exercise before I eat anything, having one of these keto-coffee's as I refer to them, is a great way to energise me before I eat.

Also, the last few days, I've been trying out 16:8 intermittent fasting, but having a keto coffee in the morning during the fast, and it's quite handy. Not sure if it will affect the fasting effort, as it makes it more of a keto fast really, but I guess I shall see :)

Oh, I usually add a little raw cacao, cinnamon, and lately ginger to my keto coffee's, but as of yet have not found a combination of those that I like much more than the basic coconut oil and coffee combo anyway.

From the sound of this and your first post, my guess is that you're missing the sweet taste, and the coconut oil and even the stevia isn't the "right" sweet taste for you. It might help to try again after a period of time going completely without sweeteners if you ever try that.

That said, I've never been sold on coconut oil in coffee. Something about the fats in coconut just doesn't do it for me in coffee. So I went the opposite as someone else and dropped the coconut oil and just do butter if I do some kind of BPC type thing.

Also, especially if you're not used to that much fat at once, it's recommended that you start small, such as black coffee with half a teaspoon of each, and gradually increase it until you get to a point that you like and works for you.

Don't knock it until you try it at least once. It's actually not that bad, and really not much different than putting cream and coconut creamer in your coffee. Especially when you remember that butter is just cream with the liquid removed.

I can't drink that stuff to save my life. I just add heavy whipping cream to my coffee in the morning. Does the trick for me.

My son gave me a tiny electric whisk for gourmet coffee drinkers and it has made my bullet proof coffee experience absolutely delightful! I start with about 2 - 3 Tablespoons of heavy whipping cream in the bottom of a large mug and use the whisk till it thickens, then I add 1 - 1.5 Tablespoons of coconut oil in on top of the cream, then 2 t butter, then I add a couple of splashes of Da Vinci vanilla and caramel SF coffee flavors, then I fill the mug the rest of the way with my hot brewed coffee. Yum!! The cream is floating in the top of the mug and it totally takes care of any oiliness underneath. It tastes every bit as good as Starbucks or JavaCat lattes. Also, I have a tablespoon of peanut butter with that and I don't feel hungry till much later and have to make myself eat something later in the day.

I started trying my coffee with Coconut Oil and Heavy cream a few weeks ago, after reading something in a keto forum about the low carb, high fat not being a true fast break. I totally need my coffee during the day (yep morning and afternoon), but struggled with cutting the sweeteners (I flip flopped between real and artificial, never feeling really good about it). So I tried it and after a few days absolutely love it!! I have added butter, cinnamon, vanilla and banana extracts as well as unsweetened cocoa powder to see what I like best. So far, coffee, coconut oil and cream (light or heavy) is my favorite. I use my blender and love the creamy texture. It gives me the morning boost I "need" and has the benefit of keeping me full until a later (thank you BPC) lunch time. When I am at work, I don't have a blender but I think because I haven't had anything sweet, I am better able to tolerate coffee with just cream in the afternoon.

I have to say though, I am struggling a little with meeting my daily calorie and protein goals without "eating" breakfast every day. Anyone else have this issue?

I was just going to add a post about this. I tried this 1 week ago and I LOVE this combo. I use the 1T coconut oil and 1teaspoon of Kerrygold butter, plus 1/2 tsp of coconut sugar for sweetener and it is my fave way to make my coffee. I put it in my Nutribullet and mix for 10-15 seconds - tastes just like a latte. It definitely gives me a boost in the morning and right before my workout. I am experimenting with it adding cocoa powder, cinnamon or any other toppings.

I can understand why people at first would think this is disgusting, but I can't have it any other way now.

i've never done the whipped version (though i may have to try that this weekend), but i normally take heavy cream in my coffee anyway. when i've added coconut oil, it's been floated on top and allowed to melt. you do get the "oil slick", but i found that the result is like a drinkable version of a mounds bar... especially when i use a chocolate-base flavored coffee. it always went down well, and left a moisturizing layer on my lips.

you could also look into making coconut oil chocolate fat bombs and putting one of those in your coffee to melt. it might help.
  • Hi everyone :) For me, the type of coffee makes all the difference as well...there is a brand by Don Francisco called Hawaiian Hazelnut which is absolutely divine when blended with the coconut oil (and butter/HWC). I have tried making BPC with other "normal" coffees (original or columbian) and it just did not turn out the way this blend does. :)
