Strange Foot Pain for Noobie

For the second time since forever I walked (briskly) 3 miles with a friend on a trial . Afterwards I had a strange pain on my left foot. It's strange because it like a tiny sharp pain as if someone stabbed my needle through my foot top to bottom. It's located about an 2 inches down from the base of my pinky toe and an inch from the left edge of my foot. Has anyone heard of this pain? It's mild, sharp and comes and goes. It's better and almost gone today (24hrs later). What is this? how can I prevent this?
Background - I workout 3x/wk I was never a runner, I'm overweight but have gone on many hikes years ago. I'm rebounding after having a baby (9months ago). I haven't had any trouble working out. I've had a similar pain before after a very long hike about a year ago. I'm not sure which foot it was but it was closer to the toes and hurt more. Enough that, after a month of waiting for it to go away, I finally saw a doctor and was going to have an xray. I didn't get one because at the time there was a possibility I was pregnant at the time. It went away on it's own.
