For RNY does hair beging falling out right at 3 months? I will be at three months on 9/11 but no hair is falling out yet. I have been having trouble with protein since my gallbladder came out/started getting sick so I am concerned. I have really thick hair so hopefully it won't be too noticeable but if it is bad I am buying either hair extensions or a wig. I don't want to have bald spots. I sound vain. I am going to start taking biotin......

I think the average is around 3 months post surgery. I know I started noticing it at 3-4 months. By 5 months, it had slowed to normal shedding and by 6 months was starting to grow back. I wore a wig for a few months because of bald spots. I could have dealt with overall thinning, but bald spots was too much for my vanity! Then when it started to grow back, had my hair cut into layers, so it didn't look like a toddler experimented on my hair. Interestingly, the texture of my hair has changed. It is still fine, but it used to dry straight no matter what I did and now it frizzes and dries in weird kinks. Maybe once it grows out some more, I can actually get it to hold some curl.0

I didn't really experience hair loss until 7-8 months out from surgery. It shocked me because its like it just started one day. I still feel like I lose a lot. I'm lucky in the fact that I had thick hair. Mine has also grown out a weird texture. It feels very dry to me. I've never had that problem before. Now, my hair is starting to grow back so I have these baby hairs everywhere, and it kills me!0

I had the sleeve, but I was told hair loss is common with all WLSs. Mine started falling out right around 3 months and my doctor said it was because I wasn't getting all my protein in as directed. We were traveling and I frankly forgot to eat most days. So I was lucky to get even 1/2 the protein I was supposed to. I upped my protein and added biotin and the hair loss stopped. I am 3 years out and have almost all the hair back too.
PS - my cousin who had gastric bypass said her hair fell out starting at about 3 months and her doctor told her to drink protein shots to counteract it. She said it worked well, but they taste horrible. She bought hers at GNC.0 -
The nut at my doc's office said that hair loss typically happened between months 3-6 regardless of what supplements you did or didn't take, but if you were going to take a supplement, she recommended a "hair, skin, nails" supplement (containing biotin) rather than adding extra protein (assumes you are already meeting your protein goal).0
