Logging calories

When I do something like yin or a gentle yoga, I use the calories burned that MFP gives me. I do a lot of vinyasa/flow type yoga too, and I've googled that it burns more calories than what MFP would give me, which makes sense since it's more vigorous and I sweat like crazy. Should I be logging it as something different? I don't want to overestimate, since sometimes I might want to eat back some of my calories.

I just use the same calorie counts for everything. I figure it evens out.

That's pretty much what I've been doing, but sometimes it just feels like I should log more considering the amount of sweat I've left on the mat, lol!

I've read that you tend to not burn as many calories in Yoga as you'd think, especially for the amount most people sweat. I think the only way to accurately measure would be to use a heart rate monitor during your practice, and log accordingly.

I tend to "log" using the MFP setting, but I don't eat back any of my yoga calories. I view it as more of a strength training exercise for MFP purposes.

when I do my yoga, from the Wii - I use the calories it says I have burned... which is lower than what MFP indicates...I may not be burning a lot of calories, but it sure makes me feel better emotionally, mentally and physically....

Oh definitely! I can tell the difference in my attitude when I don't make it to the mat for a few days.

MFP over-estimates exercise calories, a lot. Many people suggest only counting 60-70% of the calories MFP states, to be on the safe side..

That's what I've read, and I'm pretty sure it's true. I did better when I didn't eat many exercise calories back, and that's probably why.
  • I count what MFP lists for "yoga" for flow/vinyasa but I don't count gentle (our gentle class is REALLY gentle though.) Like today, I do two classes (one flow, one gentle) and just count one.

i believe i burn more in a really active vinyasa class than mfp says. but each yoga class and teacher is so unique i think it would be impossible to come up with a firm cals burned for yoga- especially when they don't have designations for vinyasa, power, gentle, etc.
as for yin or restorative i never count it because generally in those classes you just sit there. and i don't count my calories from walking around the house or sitting in class or the like.
and as for eating the cals back, i just eat whatever my body tells me i need. after a more active day i'll eat some more either that day or the next. after a more relaxed day but body isn't as hungry. just like you listen to your body in yoga, it's so beneficial to listen to your body in terms of hunger cues.

I need to remember to be more mindful of hunger cues, that's a good point. There are days I could eat all the things, all day long and have no trouble hitting my calorie goal. Then there are days I may not be hungry for one reason or another but eat dinner with the family because it's "dinner time" and I need to stop doing that.
