Has this group inspired you to increase the distance you swim?
Being on this group and hearing the huge distances people are covering has certainly been a great inspiration to push myself even further!
So easy to be complacent when you're the king of your own pool/ swimming venue, isn't it?

I like my distances and 5km was always my furthest distance. I haven't managed to go further than that, but looking at the impressive times some people post I am definately trying to get faster. What this board has spurred me to do was have a few lessons to improve technique, learn fly and mix it up when I swim. All good stuff.

I was doing my distances before I was on MFP (I had lost 24 lbs. before I found this place), but the group here definitely keeps me motivated to keep at it. This has been, by far, my longest sustained time of consistent exercise (especially swimming) & watching what/how much/how often I'm eating......

Same here! Much more consistent and my daily swims have gotten longer too!
This swimmers community keeps me sharp - no slacking lol!

    +1.

i felt like quitting at under 1k today, but wouldnt dream off reporting less than 4 figure yardage amongst my more illustrious peers.

It REALLY makes a difference. Before I was on here I would bail on days that I didn't feel like going, then those days would come more frequently until I realized I hadn't been swimming in quite a while. Now I wake up, most days I feel like going, but on the days I don't feel like it I go anyway because I know all of you are hitting it hard & I would feel like such a hypocrite if I didn't go. Ironically, those days I didn't want to go end up being some of my best workouts.........

I was already at 5km when I joined this discussion. :) Longest single swim is 10km.

I can only dream of 10 km.
My end year goal last year was a 5 km so I may set a 10 km swim as my end year goal for 2014.
But I'll have to get a music player before I attempt that! The monotony would be insane!!!

A music player is definitely the way to go, AQ - I LOVE my iPod in the water. When my wife first asked me if I wanted one I kept telling her no because I figured I was having enough trouble keeping track of my yardage due t my mind wandering, I figured the iPod would make it that much more difficult. She got one for me a few years ago for Christmas anyway & it, surprisingly, had the opposite effect - listening to the music keeps my mind from wandering as much & I find it easier to keep track of my yardage......

    Yes.

I don't post much and I don't log on that often at the mo, but just knowing other swimmers are out there trying to turn their 1 mile into 2 miles, or their 200m into 400m, or their 25m to 50m - it all counts! - is inspirational.

I've gone from managing a few lengths to regular 1k swims and still love dipping into the group. It's the only bit of MFP I am currently using.

I can now say yes. I now do 4 miles a day as my 'short' swim. Sometimes more. Still working on doing a 10 mile swim. Have not hit that bench mark yet.

Definitely. I would have given up the day I began without you guys. The encouragement to continue, the reminders that everybody is working on something, and it can be hard even for seasoned swimmers... It has all helped me to keep going. MsJ's not been on the board for a while, but her workout that she made up for me has had a big impact on my swimming.
