diabetes education class

hi there,

was diagnosed with type 2 about a month ago. i haven't checked any blood glucose levels or anything since. my first diabetes education class is tomorrow (finally). i'm excited but i'm a little nervous.

upon diagnosis my doctor made me promise that i would make immediate drastic changes (1200 calories a day, no sweets, half the starches, small portions) in order to avoid getting put on medication. i've kept my promise and have lost 20 pounds. i'm actually OK with eating the way i have. I FEEL ALIVE. i walk every day (about 5K steps avg). i'm really, really trying and i feel like i can succeed and beat this.

or can i?

i'm kind of scared of what i'll find out tomorrow. it's a 2.5-ish hour class. from everything i've read, learning all i can about this disease will be very beneficial. i'm just worried that they're going to test my blood and the numbers will be too high and/or i'll learn i've been doing something wrong this whole time.

i don't really have a question. i guess i just wanted to finally say hi... been lurking for a bit now.

It sounds like you've made great strides!

Don't fear the readings or the class. I wish I would have taken things more seriously at first (like you did). One thing I have learned is that knowledge is power and the class will either tell you that you are on the right track, or it will help you correct some things. Considering your weight loss you must be doing pretty good so far. Think of what you will accomplish after the class!
  • Changing your usual habits around meals, food choices, and exercise is a process and it sounds like you're making an excellent start. Think of the class as giving your more information and tools to continue making healthy choices and an opportunity to learn even more about diabetes management. Let us know how the class goes, OK? ~Lynn /Glucerna
