What does "calories in vs calories out" mean?

This is just another way of describing a calorie deficit or calorie surplus. We all burn and consume a certain amount of calories every day. The calories we burn are based on our BMR, activity level, and exercise.

If I burn (on average) 2500 calories per day, and consume 2000 calories per day, then I have a 500 calorie deficit. Since one pound is roughly 3500 calories, then I should lose around 1 lb per week.

If I burn 2500 calories per day and consume 3000, then I have a 500 calorie surplus. At this rate I should gain about 1 pound per week.

When people say, "it's all about calories vs calories out" they just mean that if you consume less calories than you burn, then you will lose weight; if you consume more calories than you burn, then you will gain weight. And they are correct.

MFP advised me to eat 1200 calories a day.

However, someone advised me to eat between my TDEE and BMR which is about 1440.

Can i drop fat this way?

Anything below you're TDEE is a deficit so yes you will lose weight.

1200 is because you're TDEE is less than 2200 (from MFP calcs) and you set it at 2lbs/week.
