A calorie deficit is the amount of calories you consume that is below your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expedenture) causing you to lose weight.

A "safe" calorie deficit for someone that is NOT morbidly obese would be to eat no more than 1000 calories under your TDEE to lose 2lbs/wk. For someone that has alot of weight to lose (80+ lbs), then these rules do NOT apply to you. You can afford to eat more of a deficit INITIALLY to lose some of the excess weight faster and not risk serious health ramifications nor will you end up "gaining the weight back" as long as you taper the deficit back to within normal levels.
